I’m discussing trans issues with someone whose heart is in the right place but who hasn’t yet gotten into the science or theory of transition therapies/surgeries. In particular they’re hung up about three issues:
-
Puberty blocking in FtM transitions and its impact on afab anatomical development if that transman doesn’t go through with the full transition
-
The underlying science of gender dysphoria and how much that impacts someone. Specifically addressing it through talk therapy versus the necessity of presenting as a different gender and getting the reassignment surgeries
-
The concept of gender as a fluid cultural costume rather than a biologically hard-coded identity, and the gender spectrum more broadly
Having discussions about it is making good progress but I also don’t have a solid handle on the science to make definitive arguments. Is there a book, collection of studies, or video essay/podcast that provides a good overview of these questions in particular?
