Because they don’t understand either one.
It started with the cold war, though, when Communism became the boogeyman.
Yep. Fascism is notoriously difficult to define. I was effectively a socialist for years before I looked into it and realized my ideals already had a label.
Well, maybe tankies hadn’t warped the idea of socialism, broken it beyond any meaningful value to the working class and turned it into surrealist, blood-drenched terror the working class wouldn’t be so damn afraid of it.

unless you’ve been brainwashed.
If you live in a nation state (which you do), you have already been subjected to the brainwashing - fascism is literally written into the laws of every one of them. It’s not people like Trump that normalises fascism - it was normalised a long time ago. Every time you see a cop driving down the street and understand that this cop can perpetrate any kind of violence they want on you while you are not allowed to defend yourself against any of it - that’s normalised fascism.
This is why people fear fascism less - it’s just an escalation of the violent “normality” we already exist in.

I know… I just don’t have the energy for it any more. I’ve been doing this whole “argue with people online” thing since 2015 - and I’m done.
So I guess this is as good a finale for me as it’s going to get.
