Police were largely powerless to stop a neo-Nazi march through the Melbourne CBD, during which officers escorted the group of masked men to “maintain community safety”.

About 100 people from the National Socialist Network dressed in black and wearing face masks marched through the Bourke Street Mall at 12.40am on Saturday.

Hey VicPol, is this you? Is this you literally last weekend? I feel like this is you but maybe I’m wrong.

Powerless my arse, that should surely qualify under EPA noise laws. They were extremely loud, at 12:40AM

How could they not be moved on for that?

I just assumed it was some football hooligans or something benign like that

    Fuckwits

To reiterate what Allan was hinting at, they do these timid little flash mobs when most people are asleep because they keep getting beaten up or humiliated whenever they do anything in daylight. The same tactics have been used (and admitted by former PF members) in the US. These neo-Nazis exist outside of communities.

And if anything, it’s validating that enough people are putting in the time and effort to make these scum scared of the daylight. Antifascism isn’t just the people you see on television or social media, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes to push back on these groups in the ways law enforcement agencies either can’t or won’t.

Every interaction between them and the radical community inevitably devolves into a fucking joke. They either run away immediately or shout about how tiny their dicks are. Antifa and related loose orgs around Naarm could stamp them out if the cops wheren’t protecting them all them time.

So obviously the cops knew in advance, how does everyone else find out these things are going to happen before they happen?

Seeing them all lined up like that is very gouranga.

It’s not clear to me if the cops ‘officially’ knew of the march beforehand and I don’t think anyone else knew other than the fascists and presumably the cops who are members and masked up.

        spoiler

On the other hand, I suspect there are enough informers in the group that feds, antifash and even journalists might have known. The amount of leaked information in the past has led to many of them being exposed and fired, and I doubt their vetting process has improved much.

    wtf :/

I agree there needs to be more to stop Neo Nazis. I can’t help but think those powers could be used on other protesters though.

Can there be tightened hate speech laws to particularly target Nazis?

      Bingo.

Can there be tightened hate speech laws to particularly target Nazis?

Germany has those. The results have predictably not been fun, and also predictably they have done nothing to curb the rise of actual neo-Nazis. Once you make one exception, you can make a hundred.

Nazis are no stranger to workarounds and skirting censorship. When the swastika gets banned, they just use the Sonnenrad, Wolfsangel, pseudo-runes, etc. and police end up abusing the laws to arrest people criticising fascism. Homework for the reader: find out how many times a party calling themselves a Centre Party was actually a fascist party. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centre_Party_(New_South_Wales). Liberalist legal bans just turn fascism into cryptofascism, it takes community effort to root it out properly.

Hell even without legal bans and censorship, fascists can’t just out and out say what they stand for until they gain solid ground with the electorate; most people need to be innoculated against fascism before they get behind the really horrible stuff. There’s a reason the Nazi Party was called the Nationalist Socialist Party and not the Kill All Jews Party.

This is also my concern. While I mock these losers for hiding behind their masks like cowards, I also don’t want it to become illegal to wear a mask in public/protests. Because I might want to wear one someday for something.

        Fuck these hateful cowards though.
