No. My understanding is that the in-game currency is both harder to come by and more important. You need it for stuff like saving at a bench.
Correct. But not most benches. Enemies drop what is effectively 2 types of currency. One is used to replenish your consumable tools, and the other is used for shops. Notably, not every enemy drops the shop currency so it’s harder to get than Geo was in Hollow Knight.

There is a small area called Pilgrim’s Rest which contains a bench and a shop. To enter this area, you need to input 30 Rosaries(the shop currency) any time you want access.
