I remarked to my wife the other day that I think THC is the greatest assistant chemical that a plant ever generated. Hell, cannabis/hemp might be the first plant grown on Mars because its science is so understood and predictable (because of the abuse/enjoyment of it). Only coffee and caffeine could say the same, but whole cultures have not tried to eradicate coffee trees.

Nah, it’s not that complex at all. You forget that people gather firewood to burn all the time and therefore have experimented with burning various plants on the fire since fire existed. When the nomadic central Asian peoples in what is now known as the Himalayas encountered wild cannabis they burnt it on the fire because it’s just everywhere around there. It’s a weed. I visited and saw ganja growing everywhere. It’s all hemp strains, but it’s the wild type hemp that Hindu Kush was bred from. Toss enough ditch weed on a fire and the smoke will get you high. People realized that it was the weed doing it, and Herodotus described the Scythians as “burning an herb on the fire that makes them drunk as wine does the Greeks” and when I read about that it all clicked for me. Of fucking course that’s how weed was discovered!
