Ten long years of white Americans spinning themselves into a frothing panicked rage because a black man was President. We had riots stretching from Baltimore to St. Louis to Portland in response to unchecked police brutality. An entire generation was priced out of the housing market. The brainrot of Silicon Valley had kicked into high gear as Elon Musk became a celebrity liberals adored. Anti-Islamic Hate was hitting a fevered pitch with the carpet bombing of Libya and much of Iraq and Syria. Half of Europe was trying to be Vladimir Putin’s best friend, while he sacked Crimea and South Ossetia. India went full Hinduvista under Narendra Modi, threatening a hot nuclear war with Pakistan. We suffered multiple man-made mega-disasters, including the BP Horizon explosion and the Stuxnet virus.

And we capped the whole mess off with COVID.

        What a great decade.

          What a great decade.

It wasn’t great, but so far, it’s better than this one.

Really depends on if you lived long enough to see it. The Internet has a very annoying recency bias. And folks who lived through the horrors of the prior decade never seem to get consulted when they’ve finally made it to the other side.

Strangely enough, despite all the hate and the violence still aimed their way, the world has never been this kind to LGBTQ folks. The community has allies they never dreamed of twenty years ago.

Migrant rights as in the shit now, but it is hard to count how many people no longer support our draconian policies of kidnapping, caging, and exiling people now that it isn’t exclusive to the unseasonably tan.

I see more sunlight on the horizon today than I’ve seen in my lifetime.

Huh? The 2010s was way kinder to lgbtq, which is part of the reason I posted it. Covid started in 2020, so that’s not part of the decade I listed. The fact that you had to reach so far as to go for the stuxnet virus solidly cements that decade as being one of the best. You can only list a few bad things and they weren’t even that bad in the context of the day and age. The bombings in the Middle East had gone down from previous decades highs. They’re now solidly climbing back up. Same for all the other shit you listed.

They weren’t identified as being Covid until 2020. Yes they happened in 2019 but no one knew it. And it was only a few cases. The pandemic didn’t start until 2020. Even then, just move the decade back one month, you’ve still had to pick and choose to find anything bad to talk about, and you completely ignored most of my comment.

In the United States, if you knew where to look, the 90s was a cresting wave about to land on our heads.

Outside the United States, the 90s was drowning people en mass. The collapse of the Soviet Era grain trade sent millions over the brink into starvation. Multiple civil wars kicked off, culminating in grisly slaughters rising to the level of genocide in quite a few instances, as Cold War alliances dissolved. Advances in aviation gave birth to the Blackhawk helicopter and the hellfire missile, giving industrial nations an exciting new way to assassination and terrorize less developed populations. Unregulated agriculture unleashed wave after wave of toxic foodstuff and novel disease. The advent of the modern computing pioneered a new level of mass fraud, embezzlement, spying, and sabotage.

Westerners lived inside a ballooning debt bubble as the rest of the world got its shit rocked, looted, and ruined.

You said pick a better decade, not list all the shitty things in every decade everywhere. In the US, it was stable and relatively quiet compared to the next 25.

If I’m LGBTQ? If I’m in the Chittagong district of southeastern Bangladesh or La Guaira, Venezuela or working the Kuwaiti oil fields? If I’m Yugoslavian or Chinese? The modern day is far superior to the 1990s.

You also did not say pick a decade that was shitty for a specific group, nationality, gender, etc.

Ask a nonspecific generic question and then tell the people that answer they’re wrong by using specifics? Seriously, dude.

it’s better for me now as a disabled person strangely enough. the medicines i need are more available and more legal. at least today. now, as to the other “other” parts of my identity, not so much, but there are some things that are a bit better nowadays.
