Should bounce it at the start of the game for tradition. Everything after that, yes the throw up is a better option.

I sounds like the main reason for switching to a throw was that the bounce was difficult for umpires to do. … which I think is an interesting motivation to arise after such a long time of using the bounce.

Sad. There was always a slight chance the ball would take a bad bounce and absolutely bean the umpire.
