I don’t know what it is exactly, but I hate modern over-the-shoulder third-person shooters. I was super hyped for Remnant 2 and tried it regardless of my dislike for the “genre”. I bought it, played it 50 minutes and never thought about the game again.

Now I’m really hyped about ARC Raiders. It looks so good on stream. I’m a daily player of Embark’s other game The Finals. But damn, do I not want to regret to buy this game.

How is the game for you? Did you dislike third-person shooters as well and were able to like ARC Raiders regardless?

FWIW, there’s a lot of videos out there with people talking about how much they’ve always hated 3P shooters and expected to hate ARC Raiders too, but ended up being surprised. Something about the world, the maps, and the immersion of it all making it work for them. Of course, YMMV.

It’s a fun game and the attention to detail is off the hook. It’s probably worth trying for an hour and if you hate it, refund it.

If your dislike is purely about the perspective, Arc Raiders might not be for you, it’s a very typical in terms of 3rd person. Although Arc Raiders’ player camera isn’t that close to the character model, so you still see a lot of the environment (which is key for this game).

Sometimes it might be for other reasons, that 3rd person perspective emphasises, for example, peeking corners while being hidden is often a pain point for some players, and it’s also a thing in Arc Raiders. I’d argue its kind of mitigated because the maps are so big and detailed, you might not know where to peek or hide, until you’re certain there’s someone around.

Otherwise it’s a fantastic game, you really feel the attention to details and quality of craft that Embark showed in The Finals so far!

I’m also an almost daily The Finals player with my group for ~2 years!

I would say yes, it’s great. I’m mixed about the third person still though. It feels great to play still, but it effects PvP in a way I don’t care for. It’s perfect for the PvE aspect, because ARC is actually dangerous, and our awareness playing a video game is a lot lower than in real life, so having third person to look out for ARC around corners is nice.

For PvP it adds an advantage for waiting. It also dramatically increases the advantage given by height. In The Finals, height is an advantage, but you can still potentially win a fight from below. In ARC Raiders, this really isn’t the case. They can choose when and where to peek while still watching you and not exposed, and you have no idea where they are. It just promotes safe play, and I’d rather people have to take risks to get info on players.

Basically, the perspective is a mixed bag. It’s much more PvE focused than other extraction games though, so that’s more of a priority than only PvP, like others are. Anyway, it’s really fun and enjoyable. A lot of skills carry over between the games too, despite how differently they play. You’ll see a lot of equipment in ARC that’s very similar to what’s in The Finals, with a different coat of paint. I’ve put $0 into The Finals, so for me it was also a way to pay them back for not being greedy with MTX.

take my input with a grain of salt, but I looked at 1 video for about 10 seconds, and saw console first - PC second style game. the camera will always bug me and I won’t play them myself regardless of how fun it might look.

for me, games like witcher 3, hell divers, arc raiders… all the same. I don’t mind 3rd person. perspective personally but there’s a certain type of game where I just can’t.

I’m sure they are all fun, but mechanics of the character movement/camera etc… I always feel annoyed when playing so I just don’t.

I like that you’re basing your opinion on 10 seconds of video. How?

It’s seems very PC first. The best way to see this isn’t the camera (TPP isn’t better for either than FPP), it’s the interface. I’m sure it works on console fine enough, but PC is definitely a first party.

The phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover” exists for a reason. You seem to have totally ignored this and still decided you have enough information to voice your opinion. Play the game and then you can have an opinion on how it plays. I don’t see how you can without playing, and especially not with so little watched. It’s better to say nothing when you have so little information.
