This is what following genre tags does, genuinely one of Bandcamp’s worst features. Unfollow them and it’ll just be a reverse chronological order of releases/purchases from artist/users you follow.

They really need to add the ability to pin tags to genre selector in the ‘Discover’ view, like you can in the Android app.

Genre tags aren’t even remotely useful either seen as artists seem to be unable to accurately tag their fucking music. The kinds of music I listen to most of the artists use tags for adjacent genres like a lot of dubstep will also have a drum and bass tag and vice versa making the existence of tags pointless.

Yeah this is why no site so far has come close to the effectiveness of tagging by consensus of rateyourmusic.com.

You can’t let bands or record labels tag, they’ll just splash as much as they can on.

So you need userbases to do it. But you also need that userbase to be able to vote against proposed genres, lest you end up with last.fm tagging. You also need a whitelist of genres, not “whatever term seems cool to me” system of last.fm.

I don’t get that, but I am firmly a metalhead so a different culture I suppose. Except black metal artists who tag their stuff death metal, like I swear half of what I see in the death metal tag is black metal without a lick of death in it.

Yeah I’m also a metalhead and bandcamp is fairly useful for me when filtering, but you’ll find a ton of bands will slap on “black metal + death metal + thrash metal + prog metal” and it’s just not the case in most cases when accurately describing the album you might be listening to.

Or how every stoner metal album is also stoner/doom/heavy/psych etc.

I remember in itunes bands would make up their own genres so when you browsed by genre there would be a bunch of one off silly genres with only one band associated with them
