With the new changes to reddit’s UI, and their insistence on age verification, I have elected to leave that platform. This includes my moderation of the /r/NewcastleUponTyne subreddit, for which I have recruited a couple of other moderators to replace me.
This sub…lemmy(?) doesn’t get much traffic, but what little traffic it may get in the future will be treated with the same deference as mine and $otherMod’s approach to the content over on the subreddit. I’m still in contact with that moderation team should there be any cross-platform high jinks.
At a later date, I may bring over the automoderator implementation I was building for the subreddit. The changes need not be overly complex, although in fairness it was never really finished. At present, there’s little to no need for it - the vast majority of posts here have been mine, although I hope that might change in the near future.
Welcome to the better platform :)
We call them “comms” for “communities” fyi as opposed to “sub-lemmy”
Comms, I’ll note that. Tbh I haven’t really been active on Lemmy much until now. I was planning to integrate both communities with a bridge, but it started getting far too unpleasant over there to really do so properly without spamming requests to handle things like hidden posts or removed ones. Plus our automod rulesets were getting to be a bit unwieldy, so trying to bring that here would have been somewhat detrimental in practise.
So… this isn’t a sub, it’s an entirely different platform, but welcome. I think you’ll find it a bit more relaxed and civil here… Although the communists are a bit rabid. Sorry about that. Just ignore them or idk, throw bread at them. They do seem a bit bread obsessed.
One thing to keep in mind, lemmy is a federated platform. So if you plant your Newcastle Upon Tyne on one server, it doesn’t automatically populate to all the other servers. I think. I’m not entirely sure how it all works, but imagine there’s 100 reddits and you can visit them all and you need to look to see which reddit a post is actually coming from. You appear to be on lemmy.world, for example, while I’m visiting from lemmy.myserv.one
I’m familiar with federation (and all of its problems, grumble). In theory, though, anyone on any other instance should be able to find us providing they’re not trying to do so from an instance that is blocked by this one or vice versa. Or behind a cloudflare stack, which is a problem I’m having at the moment with my mastodon instance and another UK instance.
I tend to shy away from the more politically oriented communities these days. I’ve had some very useful tips from the 'nix communities though, which is something. Relaxed and civil sounds amazing. You have no idea how much casual racism we have to field in Reddit, and the vast majority of it is from american and Russian botposters. Frustrating to say the least. Some peace and quiet for a bit would be rather decent I think :D
