I recently noticed that both Joy-Cons could not be used as individual controllers anymore. I got the tools and the replacement parts from iFixit and repaired them myself.

Right on. Being able to repair and renew is a great skill to have.

Separately though…Joy Cons are so shit to use. I replaced them with 3rd party controllers with proper analog sticks and comfortable grips and never looked back.

I feel like it depends a lot of how big your hards are. They do fine for me (though I still prefer full size controls), but I have little hands. I could see them being miserable for many people though

If they work well for you, that’s great. The fact that I don’t like them obviously doesnt mean others can’t.

I do have big hands, but interestingly the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro was something I could play for hours in a much more compact form factor. But then again the analog sticks there have better travel, are well recessed and are hall effect. Don’t know what the Switch 2 controller is like, but Nintendo had no right to cut corners the way it does.

Yeah they also cut huge corners on the wireless card that has an issue with dropping packets, didn’t add an Ethernet port to the dock, and then made all their online games use a peer to peer connection limited by the worst connection in the lobby 😅

Its cool the retroid works so much better for you! Did you ever try like the DS or 3DS? If you have I’m curious how you felt about the ergonomics

I feel like a huge part of the issue with the switch are its ergonomics combined with its weight. You can only use your hands for but so much, supporting the weight, operating the tiny controls, and gripping the device. Like it feels like kind of a combination of not enough space to grip, too small of actual controls and also enough weight that you really need a better grip on it

I never had any Nintendo handheld before the Switch. I’m weird though, so I might be the wrong person to give a perspective on that. I’ve got my phone attached to my Steam Deck so I can watch videos while playing games. It weighs a lot and I happily hold that up in my hand for hour long gaming sessions. This is somehow comfortable and manageable for me.

Yeah, the steam deck gives tons of space to grip comfortably to support the weight, I can see how that wouldn’t be as bad as it might look

The DS through the 3DS had even tinier controls than the switch, but weigh significantly less which is why I was curious if you’d ever tried them

I’m glad you find a way of setting up the switch to work better for you, in spite of the very child-centric feeling design lol
