I strongly believe that Spotify should be removed as a suggestion and added to the incumbent/boycott category due to the reasons already mentioned in the red warning box. I urge everyone to cancel their subscriptions and when you cancel they will ask why, please mention the reason you canceled is because Spotify gave billions to Joe Rogan who’s basically a lie and propaganda factory.
Spotify is a pillar of support for the Trump regime. Spotify’s CEO donated $150000 to Trump and hosted brunch for him. He also did the typical billionaire hissy fit threatening to leave Sweden unless they make tax cuts. He’s just another right-wing billionaire and not worth your support.
also if you want to preserve your music add your liked songs to a public playlist (ctrl-a > ctrl-c > make playlist > ctrl-v) then download it as a csv (many sites like that online), then obtain the files (legally ofc), set up syncthing to share across devices and use any foss local music player, i just did this and it was so nice getting actual shuffle back. muspy provides an rss and emails whenever artists upload, to replace spotify follows.
muspy uses google analytics and requires an account.
what alternatives are there? i can block analytics with ublock and the account makes sense so that i can get emails
I‘m still trying to find something myself. There are local open source apps and some integration for musicbrainz but I can’t quite remember. None of them were a good solution for me at the time I looked into them. I might have to do another round of looking into it.
But muspy isn’t it for me. Yeh one can block trackers but this is how enshittification begins and I’m not going to put effort into it if the signs are already there.
mixcloud seems to be this platform for actual DJs to upload mixes. Serves as a human-made way to discover new music rather than an algorithm
I paid for Spotify for a few years, but I don’t see the point anymore. All of their “personalized” playlists are literally the same stuff, just shuffled in different order. Particularly ridiculous when Spotify Wrapped says your top song is one that the algorithm keeps putting into every list, and not something you particularly like.
Sure, it is nice to listen to a new album when it comes out, but with the number of bands I care about, I could just buy the albums outright, supporting the band and actually owning the music.
And if you listened to an audiobook or a podcast, your home page will be full of promotions (many not relevant).
And there are local radio stations with decent web streams and without commercials that play the music I enjoy and new releases.
Tidal is good. Plus you can import all your playlists and likes from Spotify so it’s easy to switch. It’s cheaper and pays artists better
I hear Qobuz is good too. It also isn’t American.
I haven’t heard of it i’ll check it out
i liked qobuz but it halved the battery life on my phone. i’ve had much better luck with tidal. but i do think qobuz is more ethical
Oh really, that is a huge bummer. Battery life is a huge issue.
I did notice something odd. I installed Qobuz just to have it for later. I can’t remember if I even opened it, but I definitely didn’t log in or anything, and yet the app was listed under running apps despite me closing it over and over. It was just opening itself in the background all the time.
That’s not a great sign, is it.
I use a sound bar connected to WiFi and Tidal would only play the first song in an album and then quit if I was using wifi on the sound bar. I had to go back to Spotify because of it.
I’ve been testing out tidal and Qobuz. Tidal is an easier switch from Spotify but I’ve seen that their ceo is also not great/a Zionist. I haven’t seen too much though so idk. If anyone has info either way that’d be helpful. If I’m gonna switch for ethical reasons I might as well go all the way. That said Qobuz has a noticeable increase in sound quality
Should I switch here?
So far the pros are ethics, music quality, and you can buy drm free music from them if you want. Cons are they’re smaller than the other companies so their catalog isn’t as complete (they had like 85% of my Spotify music), and their app is not as feature complete and at times buggy.
You can do the free trial and they allow you to transfer your music for free, though it may take a few days to get the link. It’s through soundbiz or something.
Personally I think I’ll try them out for a bit longer, the missing music is the more niche stuff. Otherwise I’ll do more research into tidal and decide.
I’ve mirrored everything to my jellyfin. The once in a blue moon I want to listen to a new song most of the artists I follow have no middle man pay and download options
I’ve mirrored everything to my jellyfin.
Could you specify? Can you download songs somehow from Spotify with some kind of tool? I have a subscription.
I don’t know if there is a tool for Spotify but there was for deezer and tidal. I used the tidal downloader for some, some are vinyl rips done by a friend, and some of the rarer ones from the musician’s site or other means. One thing I’ve noticed is bonus tracks in lidarr aren’t always on streaming platforms.
I find a lot of bands I follow upload deluxe versions of albums on Spotify.
But if you would: is the Tidal tool official or “nah 🏴☠️”? 😅
its not official but I like to think of it like instead of paying and downloading the same song again every time I listen to it, I pay and download it once, then leave a playlist on loop on a spare tablet so artists get their listen counts. downloader was called tidal dl ng iirc
also the deluxe versions usually exist in other formats like vinyl or cd but I found on streaming services sometimes the last 1-3 tracks are just not there, or some weird cases where on streaming the song exists but on youtube or something there is a loger version
Cool, thanks for that info
spotify web app + ad blocker = win
That’s clever, I’d say that’s a fully ethical way to enjoy Spotify. Actually I didn’t know that was possible before because I’ve never tried registering for Spotify. I’ll be sure to suggest this when someone says they still want to use Spotify.
https://www.xmanagerapp.com/ too for patched Spotify clients
Just killed my spotify account yesterday for apple music. Got a .99 cent offer to try it for 3 months and I can transfer my playlists with an apple service. Didn’t transfer my liked songs but I screen shotted them before I hit delete on my account. Can’t afford to keep the service but spotify has become cartoonishly evil and I’ll just do what I can later to keep up with my song lists for other options down the line.
