“Masters of Albion is the culmination of my life’s work, a game that owes so much to titles like Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, and Fable,” quoth the Molyneux in a press release. “It’s a totally unique game that we hope will delight players, a game that brings God Games into the modern gaming landscape and puts the genre firmly back on the map.”

From the videos I’ve seen, Masters of Albion is based on his previous game, Legacy, which was a crypto pump and dump scheme. I played it for an hour on their free “non-crypto” server, it was total shit. Lots of clicking and an unsatisfying core business sim gameplay loop. It was clear the whole thing was made for trying to sell NFTs and no attention was paid to whether the game was fun.

The last Molyneux game that I played was the first Fable. I liked it and skipped everything since then. If the reviews are good I might take a look at his new game.

I enjoyed Black & White quite a bit. As a spin on a classic Civ / RTS, it was both novel and fun. Buggy as hell, but when you’re on the bleeding edge, its inevitable.

But holy shit did this man over-promise. Just… constantly. Dude put a pizza in the oven and insisted he’d be pulling out dinner for twelve at Le Bernardin. Which is a shame, because when his games had a bit of time to mature - Fable II was imho, a much more developed game than the original - they really hit their stride. But the dude repped his game like six Sam Altmans in a trench coat. There was never any hope that he could deliver on his promises, and you can only get suckered so many times - no matter how much fun the final product - before it chaffes to give that guy any more of your money.

So… extrapolating trends from his career suggests that the culmination will be to deliver complete vaporware.

So it’s the bare minimum of both Black and White and Fable? That’s what it looks like.

Has Molyneux given up on Fable or is Fable entirely out of his hands now? I noticed he didn’t use the name Fable by name here, just the country/world name.

Honestly, the bare minimum Black and White and Fable would be good enough for me to check it out. If that’s the plan, and they execute it well, I’m all in. What worries me is that they will aim too high and spend the whole development budget on features that will never work in the final release.

The Fable IP is owned by Microsoft, so unless 22cans is working with/for them the game cannot officially be Fable.

So Microsoft pens the name Fable but anyone can set a game in Albion as long as they don’t call it Fable? Or is that name far older, from some old fairy tale or something? I haven’t played a Fable game since the second one (still mad about the ending) and I recognize the name.
