AKA “Star Trek: Let’s Blow Our Entire Budget on One 20 Minute Space Walk”
It’s a nice space walk though. I want more Star Trek trying to be 2001
There was a second spacewalk sequence that they shot, then cut in post-production. It’s on YT, last I checked.
This is an interesting movie in that it regularly gets slammed, but also regularly gets praised as “underrated.”
I guess with a phaser against my head, I’d opine that it’s slightly underrated, being a movie that most Trekkies should enjoy, but also less-than-fully-satisfying for general movie fans. Still, being the very first ST movie, trying to reinvent a bunch of stuff from over a decade before, I think it was a respectable effort, and nobody can fairly complain that it was a downright bad movie. It certainly had its majesty, at times.
I think TMP was too oldschool for its own good. I still get chills during the Enterprise model shots and the V’Ger interiors - these things are majestic and it is low key fascinating how Shatner evolved his acting style into more subtle and nuanced - something that started to truly shine in the next movie and moving forward.
