Greetings, programs! I don’t know anything about folk punk, but I like a few bands that might be somewhere close. Mind if I reply to this post with a few songs and y’all can tell Me if they’re folk punk?

Solas - Tell God and the Devil

Another Irish song, this one’s about copper miners committing a minor act of heresy and looking after each other even if the gods want them dead. I found this song from a playlist made in response to this meme: image

This song is kinda too good to match what I’ve been told punk is like. Does punk have to suck or can it be good?

Fiddler’s Green - One Fine day

This is an Irish song about a man leaving his wife because she loves him too much. Fiddler’s Green love to sing about just being an awful example of a human being. Another of their songs is about a man suddenly coming to his senses at the altar and telling his fiance she should say no to marrying him, because he’s going to be a terrible husband. I dunno if they have some unresolved trauma or what, but I like their music.

No, most of these would be considered Celtic folk/Celtic rock, which is different but adjacent. You might enjoy the Dropkick Murphys :)

Thanks for introducing me to Elvenking!

According to Wikipedia, celtic punk is a subgenre of folk punk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_punk#celtic_punk

I kept thinking about this comment and came back to it because I think the idea of “folk” is culturally variable. I like the idea that there’s different folk music all over the world, that “folk” doesn’t just mean “American”. Like, Bloodywood use traditional Indian instruments and vocal sounds. I’m pretty sure there’s didgeridoo punk here in Australia, because I’ve heard didgeridoo metal. One day I really want to hear some metal or punk that uses the erhu, My favourite Chinese instrument. If Folk Punk can only be American then I don’t think it’s for Me, because I love music from all over the world. Including some great American bands.

You’re right. Perhaps I’ve been too focused on American Folk Punk. Next week, I’ll be focusing on gender-diverse members of the scene, but I think it would be awesome to have a week dedicated to international folk/punk. Thank you for your response.

That’s pretty classic Celtic rock/punk. You’d probably enjoy Flogging Molly and Gaelic Storm if you like that.

    Elvenking - Pagan Revolution

Exactly what it says on the tin. This song is most certainly closer to folk metal than any other genre, but are the vibes punk enough to also get the folk punk label? Or is it missing a special sauce I don’t have the genre experience to know about?

TBH, I barely know a thing about FolkPunk, but those all seem like good fits to me. Or maybe FolkRockPunk is even more accurate, I don’t know.

I’m thinking that Black 47’s classic Funky Ceili would be a good fit, along with some of the Pogue’s stuff.
