The governing body also wants the ability to share that information with whoever it wants—including law enforcement agencies like ICE. In California, one union is pushing back.
Who better than the workers indeed:
“Exploiting workers, using security forces to scare people—that is not a game of unity,” Petersen said, evoking FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who regularly hails soccer’s power to bring togetherness and unity to the world. “FIFA’s record is atrocious on human rights. People have stood up to them, though here in the United States we’re having trouble finding people who will put themselves on the line. But our members are ready to do it. We want games that are successful for everyone. Right now that is not happening. Instead, what we’re seeing is division, exploitation, and a situation where a few people are making a lot of money.”
“The World Cup can’t happen at SoFi if there’s no food, if there’s no drinks—those are amenities that are essential,” he continued. “We’re determined to make sure all of our demands, including our demand for housing, are met. Someone needs to hold them accountable—who better than the workers who make the games possible.”
