Great Lakes region, USA. April 2026.

I finally found a loon. I haven’t even so much as heard one yet this year. I did get the call too! One of my favorites. I had so much fun birding and kayaking today that I’m going out again tomorrow. I spotted a ton of herons, egrets, and kingfishers.

Can you share a little bit about how you got this photo? I’ve been thinking about capturing a loon for a long time but never got around to it.

Were you on the shore, or in a boat? Inside a blind?

Does the description from the post not show for you? I didn’t really do anything special to get it. I was kayaking and happened upon the loon. I was probably within 20’ of it. It was early in the morning so the lighting is nice.

Loons are my favorite bird. We both love fishing for one, and 2 they produce an ambience that can’t be beat. Imagine this:

You’ve worked your ass off all year. You’re definitely burnt out and should probably be taking more time off than this one fishing trip to Bemidji every year. You stop at Northwoods Bait & Tackle to pick up the bait and replace the reel you broke last year. You continue driving towards the cabin, and finally get there about 40 minutes later. You unpack the vehicle, get all the food put away, call dibs on your bed, and generally get the cabin in order. 4pm. Not too late to hit the water, so obviously you do. You’re out there for a couple hours, enjoying nature and occasionally getting a bite on your line. 7pm. The sun is starting to set. There’s no way in hell DNR will catch you out here, so you crack open a beer. No one is talking, there’s no wind, and the only sound is water lapping the side of the boat. Then suddenly you hear a loon calling in the distance. This. This moment, this place, this is how we were meant to live life.

I can confidently say after 10 years, the feeling never gets old. I look forward to it every year
