I used to use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ω, at first they were awful because the treble hurt my ears but I got used to it in a few weeks and I had them for years until they broke. Then I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 599. They were alright, but they’ve started falling apart now too

So what should I go for next? I’ve been looking at the DT 770 Pro X which ticks most of my boxes. Can they be run through an amp? They’re only 48 Ω.

Can you recommend anything else? Sheepskin pads would be cool, but that’s not a requirement. I primarily use it for movies, music, gaming and VoIP. Budget is around 300€.

Thanks!

I would suggest looking at the DT 700 PRO X. I’ve had a pair of 770 pros from the late 1980’s for 35+ years that I had replaced the drivers and pads on a few times. Still great cans, albeit power hungry as mine are the 250 ohm drivers so I can’t really leave the house with them without bringing power reinforcement. I can run the 700s off my phone and they sound good.

I finally had a few bucks lying around and bought a set of the 700 PRO X’s 2 years ago and they’ve been a revelation. Much more evenly tuned through the ranges, they give you the flexibility to add sound as desired.

I wear them for hours without any noticeable ear fatigue and since you’re already used to the fit that won’t be an issue for you. They’re currently on sale for 222 Euro direct from beyerdynamic.

Thank you very much! I’ve basically narrowed it down to DT 700 Pro X and DT 770 Pro X. I’m going to spend some time comparing the two.

How’s the build quality in your experience?

They’re very solid. Excellent build, as I assume the 770 PRO Xs will also have. Otherwise, they have the same drivers in both models. The only real difference between 700 and 770 is the tuning and EQ.

The 770 is basically the same as the old 770 pros with the heavy bass and bright high end, whereas the 700s have a flatter curve. To me they’re more pleasant to listen to, especially for longer sessions.
