“Deserted?” A desert island can still have a lot of people. “Desert (n)” means little water. “Deserted (adj)” means few (or no) people. “Dessert (n)” means a sugary food. “Desert (v)” means to abandon.
English is kind of a sucky language.
“Desert” can also mean “deserted”, which is what the word in “desert island” means. It’s basically a fossilised older usage of the word that no-one uses on its own any more.
At the end he deserted the undeserted desert island, hopefully to find dessert somewhere.
