Was chatting with folks in the lunch room, and it came up (from them) about how horrible Microsoft /windows is, how they have a laptop at home with win 11 but it sucks so bad they dont use it and just use their phone instead.
I of course had to say (in a conversational way, not being elitist) my life has vastly improved since I eradicated windows from my life, and Linux is rediculously easy now. They all looked at me like a master hacker and couldn’t understand how I could do anything on Linux because (their words) " you have to be a programmer to use it, its just a black screen!"
Sooo I explained how GUI desktop environments have been around since at least the late 90s, and while it operates differently under the hood, there are dozens of versions of Linux that act and look almost identical to windows. Not to mention the insane performance boost over windows. They were surprised any normal person could ever use Linux. These are smart people, they just have no idea what’s possible.
Its just crazy the amount of misunderstanding there is out there ! But hopefully I made them think a little bit more about how linux actually works, I doubt they’ll ever change but every little bit helps.

You might suggest a Mac next time. It’s a middle ground between not being Windows and being Unix.
Personal choice but I wouldn’t. Apple is a walled garden that you cannot trust. Once they have you you are locked in and forced to do their bidding.
Are they better than Microsoft? A teeny bit…
And yeah, the point is to use all hardware and minimize e waste. Can’t run osx on anythibg other than Mac without significant work and at that point Linux would be better.
That said, I have a 25 year old Mac that is still useable for most things and can web browse, so they have longevity !
hackingtosh is not possible anymore for the newest version of macOS btw. I think it just doesn’t suport intel or something anymore.
The point of Linux though is that you can put it on old hardware to revive it. Outside of a Hackintosh you can’t really do that with OSX.
Latest version of mac doesn’t support intel I’m pretty sure. So now hackingtosh is not a thing for it and probably won’t be for the newest versions for some years at least.
I know what you’re saying, but also macOS is actually a certified Unix. So not really a “middle” ground towards Unix.
Yes that’s what I meant. Between being Unix and not being Windows, it’s a middle ground towards Linux.
Not really, the UI and stuff like keyboard shortcuts are completely different (like the command key for example, wtf is this). When I switched to Linux, it was really intuitive. Stuff was in the places I expected them to be. Definitely not the case case with MAC OS. Had to constantly google how to do the most basic stuff. Linux really is easier to switch to than Mac OS if you come from Windows.
