Interesting article from 2018. But nothing has changed at all. Even the electric cars I see on the road are huge.

countries like the UK, France, Italy and Germany there are now around 5 vehicles for every 10 people

That’s a weird way to say 1 car for every 2 people.

So many cities could be made completely car-free.

Just force people to park near the edge and use alternative transport from there. This would give city centers the space to be greener and safer to live in.

Especially in Europe this should be fairly easy. Some cities are pushing towards this too. Not sure if American cities are suited sadly enough, as many of them are built with cars in mind.

I say not less cars, but no cars. We need to move towards societies where we arent dependent on the asphalt industry.

We need to learn how to live slow again.

    zero carz🦔

No cars is a bit too idealistic, but agree on ending the general dependency on them. Cars is not just speed, but also access. And car infractructure is the same as for buses, emergency vehicles, taxis etc. And I don’t think we should necessarily end those.

But yeah, I still chant for “no cars” as the idealistic general goal.

So my moving company should use trains? I’m not sure if you’re just naive or something else. Of course we don’t “need” cars. The same way we don’t need Internet, or electricity.

I dont believe in trains. we dont need fast transport. and we dont need internet. electricity is useful, but our demands should not rely on industry.

one of the greatest characteristics of humanity is our ability to adapt. we should play to this strength.

Provide better public options. It takes me 25 minutes to get to work by car and 75 minutes by public. Fuck that.

Most likely I’ll live the rest of my life not owning a car, using public transport, mainly.

If most of the humans were decent I would be absolutely furious that people still use cars to get to work.

Most humans are absolutely disgusting. Smoking right under the no smoking sign at the stop, blasting TikToks, shitty (or, in fairness, any kind of) music from their phone speakers, getting on the tube without a mask while coughing, sneezing at everyone in the crowded carriage, taking up two seats just because why not either by placing their stuff on the seat or just manspreading, having phone conversations on loudspeakers… I could go on forever.

I will keep using public transport till I kick the bucket, but FUCK I totally understand everyone who prefers to have their own private space.

Im curious what people here would take to work. A 20 minute drive or an hour bike ride. Buses don’t exist near me nor will they. What are my options. It’s too hot, the weather is unpredictable, and im not spending an hour one way to work.

In a well designed urban society, cars will be the slowest mode of transport.

Trust me bro, we just need 1 lane only. Just one lane for cars, bro. And 6 lanes in each direction for busses and trains and bicycles.

If you say there will never be buses near you, I presume you don’t live in a city. If you did, I don’t see why the city creating a bus line there wouldn’t be possible.

For folks commuting from outside the city to inside, the best is a big car park outside the city next to a commuter train station. Make it frequent and reliable.

In all honesty, I would probably drive in your situation, though I might invest in a folding bike/e-bike I can toss in the trunk. It’s crazy how small those things are now! They had some Urtopias at the local bike shop last time I swung by, and I swear they fold up smaller than most adult scooters I’ve seen.

Fwiw my commute is about 35 min by regular bike, 25 by e-bike, 15 by car if the traffic is light (that’s a big if), or around 45 by bus. E-bike is my preferred option.

“Genghis Khan, who established the world’s largest contiguous empire between the 13th and 14th centuries, has been branded the ‘greenest invader’ in history as his murderous invasion actually helped scrub about 700million tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. According to a new research, the ruthless Mongol warrior killed so many people during his bloody invasions that huge swathes of cultivated land depopulated and returned to forest.”

Yes. And this is easy to solve with decreased birth rates. People die naturally and populations reduce significantly on their own on fairly short periods of time

My response might have been a bit curt, but whether you realize it or not, you’re using ecofascist framing when you argue (even casually) that population decline is a serious solution for climate change.

Put simply: the problem isn’t with the mere number of homo sapiens. The problem is that some of those homo sapiens live unsustainably in a way that is destroying our climate and local ecosystems. In particular, some of those homo sapiens are capitalists who disproportionately command whole ecosystems to be obliterated, consume and waste like there’s no tomorrow (because there is no tomorrow while they’re in control), and command all the world’s governments to intentionally ensure that the vast majority of the other homo sapiens live in squalor and fight each other over scraps. Furthermore, ecofascists correctly identify the squalor, the fighting for scraps, and environmental obliteration that these capitalist scum impose upon us as injustices, but because they’re fascists, they then blame the victims of the capitalists, e.g. climate refugees and poor minorities in the large, instead of the capitalists themselves.

That does not mean that the Earth has an infinite carrying capacity for homo sapiens and that we can never ever have discussions about population size. But if we do that, we need to make it explicit that (1) reducing population size (involuntarily or otherwise) is not a serious solution for climate change or environmental destruction (voluntary reducing population size might be part of the solution to some problem, but…see the next point), and (2) we must resist any attempts to reduce population size in any way that violates our freedom to live and bodily autonomy. Any serious proposal for population reduction by a government or capitalist necessarily implies genocide and will likely involve eugenics since the capitalists are already racist and bigoted in a variety of intersectional ways. And even most “voluntary” population reduction schemes (e.g. of the kind “”“anarcho”“”-primitivists call for) are really just letting the worst-off victims of capitalism die off in squalor.

Hence why my answer is always “you first”. Because if you think that population reduction is so neat, you ought to be willing to be one of the population reduced, right? Otherwise, you’re implicitly putting yourself above others who, within a pro-population-reduction framework, ought to die and not give birth so that you may live without making any changes. Along what lines do you deserve to live more than the population reduced?

As climate change becomes increasingly difficult to ignore, ecofascism is the current iteration of fascist ideology. You might have been joking, but the ecofascist who put that thought in your head? They’re not! So yes, I actually do have to be curt when you do legwork for them, even by accident. There needs to be a(n extremely mild) social consequence when people do this kind of thing. You need to know that you’re stepping on a landmine.

And yes, it had to be this long and this detailed in response to a few words. Yes I could, in fact, infer all of this information about an ecofascist framing from an off-the-cuff comment of a few words length, because it’s a dog whistle, and therefore there’s a subtext that you are (I hope) accidentally invoking, and because I’ve seen it a thousand times before and I will see it a thousand times again. And yes, even if you knew all of this already and were just trying to make a joke, yes I had to comment this brick of text for the simple reason that someone else might have seen what you wrote and thought it was cool to say stuff like that without knowledge of its subtext… like I believe you did. Don’t prove me wrong.

And I hope this explains why your original comment got majority downvotes.
