  • people who are polarized don’t see it that way. they only care about your agreement or using violence if you disagree.

lemmy has a ton of users who openly advocate for violence against those they disagree with. but if you ask them if they apply that standard of themselves, they say start telling you that’s the ‘paradox of tolerance.’ because you know their opinions are totally good if they are intolerance of the intolerance! but they themselves should be tolerated! or something. it’s pure insanity.

everyone wants to be the perpetrator of violence, but never the victim…

  • tildes has a very strong bent. if you say anything the admin disagrees with you get banned.

was banned there pretty fast because i kept quoting legal stuff, and the users didn’t like that and the nor did the admin. they don’t like facts that interrupt their biases.

for me quality discussion should include facts, not consist of convenient narratives that are highly biased. but that isn’t what the users and the admin their believe. fwiw i also got my comments for removed for my disagreement about movies being good/bad/great, which is entirely subjective. but apparently my dislike of tropey action films, like Christopher Nolan’s and Hans Zimmers BWAHHH BWAAHH nonsense, upset people.

  • yeah i can do that, until they report me and get me banned because the mod in charge of the community agrees with them.

fwiw i got banned from reddit entirely, for having an outdoor cat and posting about it, because it pissed off many ‘cats are mass murderers and should only be kept indoor’ users, and the mods who agreed with them. i was banned over the pretext of ‘promoting violence’ by allowing my cat to be outdoors, and therefore being ‘pro mass murder’.

It gets nasty real fast. this wasn’t even in a subreddit about cats, it was in a local city subreddit.

the issue is that people have a massive bias that their choices and beliefs, are the only valid and correct ones, and everyone else should be silenced or abused until they agree.

  • what about content where it’s liberals hating on conservatives or policing every event for diveristiy and inclusion?

like i used to post about bike rides on reddit. and host them. then i got harassed for being ‘ableist’, because what about someone who can’t ride a bike, i’m excluding them and being discriminatory! no bike ride should exist unless it’s inclusive for people who can’t ride bikes because of a disability or lack of physical fitness!

  • people who use a platform based on it’s supposed politics are never going to be normal. they are going to be ideological and see everything through said ideology and try to enforce that ideology on others on the platform.

and they aren’t going to allow ‘normal’ content if normal isn’t coded/policed to be consistent with their beliefs.

reddit was ‘normal’ until 2016, and then slowly every aspect of the site was politicized. i used to have lots of different viewpoints and a general consensus in the middle somewhere. after 2016 reddit started fracturing into more extremist camps who would take over various subreddits and impose their views on everyone else.

  • yeah i volunteer a lot. i do tasks that require knowledge and professional skills that actively contribute to make life better for everyone. i have done training for it and for it for years.

i don’t do political stuff or homeless stuff, which is what most people seem to think volunteering is? and it makes people mad when they assume that and i say that’s not what i do, i explain what i do, they tell me how stupid it is that I’m not getting paid for what I do… because well there are people who do what i do for volunteering that do get paid for it…

  • pretty much all of my high school friends went off the deep end, except for myself.

my best friend went to jail for heroin positition and beating his girlfriend.
most of my other friends dropped out of college and burned out on drugs to the point they looked/sounded like homeless mushmouths, or if they were women, they got married at like 20 and popped out kids and never had jobs.

one of my girlfriends became a nun another one became a stripper
another became a nun then left the covenant became a trad wife
another one became a poor broke hippie and married the guy she dated after me who was poor broke musician, and they both became addicts.

a lot of other people i was not friends with, even if they did graduate college and get jobs, lived at home, married very young, and basically inherited their parents homes and never left the area. they never lived on their own or had lives outside of the town. that includes some of my relatives, they all ended up working for their parents even if they graduated college.

I grew up in a shitty town that was in the lower quartile of economy/education. i was maybe like 10% of people who grew up there who ‘made it out’. and when people learn what town i grew up in they tend to give me the cold shoulder because it’s not a ‘good place’ and ‘good people’ don’t come from there… which is pretty much true. it sucks to that i will never live down the fact my parents were broke and that town was the best place they could afford to live.

on the flip side, anytime i met anyone from my past… they think I’m major pretentious asshole now because I went to an ivy league school, got a good job, lived on my own my entire life, got a graduate degree, lived abroad, and now live in one of the most expensive zip codes in the country. and they start telling how ‘disappointed’ they are I’m not famous or super rich some bullshit. because they are miserable twats who hate their lives and made bad choices. I didn’t. i have never been back to that down since my parents sold the house when i was 21.

  • my life is pretty great. I love it.

What i don’t love, however, is inviting people into my life only for them to tell me how crappy it is because it’s not the life they want. I don’t really socialize anymore because I am so sick of people telling me how wrong my life is because I don’t enjoy what they enjoy or want what they want. fore example, i drive a 10 year old hatchback, and almost everyone new I meet, when they learn this, lectures me no how I should drive a ‘better’ car, and it should be a BMW SUV or something like that, and all it is them projecting their desires onto me. and if i dare say something like ‘I’m good with what I have’ I get a lecture about how I must be mentally ill or stupid. How could I possible be happy with my ‘crap’ car? my job, my home, my dog, etc.

I used to have lots of friends, but the past 5-10 years it’s dwindled to like 3 people. Because I shut people like this out of my life once they start talking to me like this. And it’s prevented me from making any new friends. I am so SICK of inviting people over to my place only to get this full on lecture about how ‘offended’ they are I don’t live in a million dollar luxury apartment, because my place is ‘shithole’ if it doesn’t have $5000 luxury appliances or something stupid like that.

I keep trying to meet new people, keep trying to date, etc, but this is the massive roadblock I keep running into. I am so sick of it and it makes me unhappy, so I basically don’t socialize much anymore. Because I like being happy and not interacting with twats who think I need a therapist if my salary isn’t 500K.

  • people being stupid and thinking they are geniuses who are the first person to ever discover something or that their passion for a very popular thing makes them unique and special and that anyone who doesn’t also like that thing is stupid and bad.

these people will also argue that any facts or objective statements that disprove them are ‘wrong/bad/fake’. and they will push their own alternative set of facts to ‘prove’ you wrong.

that would include PC gamers. like, it’s cool you can get 250fps dude, but really, for 99.9% of people who game, nobody can see the difference, or cares. it’s mostly just you justifying to yourself it was ‘worth it’ to spend $1000s for bragging rights. but a lot of hobbies are like this.

  • reddit isn’t fun anymore. it’s way too serious and full of weirdos who take everything super seriously.

lemmy isn’t as bad, but it’s getting there. more and more weridos showing up here who want to harass you and ban you for not being like them.

i was a reddit user since 2010, it was a great site until the 2016 election when it started rapidly going downhill and then massively accelerated after 2020 and now with the AI crap, they ban you for stupid reasons. I got banned in '22 for talking about my cat killing rabbits, because I was promoting violence, apparently. they unbanned me for the IPO, of course.

It’s a stupid place full of stupid people. lemmy has smarter people, but honestly that is really starting to deteriorate as more and more people come and they are dumb. way too many brainwashed people on here who think it’s OK to scream at and threaten other users for differences of opinion. i will never understand people like that.

  • I don’t think I could ever go back to working in an office 5 days a week. There is no upside to it for me in anyway.

I go in a few times a month still, for various functions and certain on site tasks, but generally dread it. And I hate my co-workers wasting my time with chit chat.

The biggest benefit was getting way more recognition. in WFH all my tasks are logged, when I was in office 50-60% of my workload was invisible because it was word of mouth. I never got promoted and raises while we were in office, during WFH I have seen my salary more than double.

it’s almost as if you should be friends with people who like you, and not friends with people who dislike you or whom you dislike.

when someone complains about how awful their friends are/make them feel, i ask them why they are friends then, and they usually tell me to go fuck myself. i don’t think i’ve ever dated a woman who actually liked her friends, so much as hated them and just wanted them to be jealous of her.

  • there was a big post yesterday about ‘rent is theft’ that had 100s of comments, that was mostly .world vs .ml users.

the .ml users basically harassed and threatened the .world users who were talking about reasonable reforms on housing prices and the causes for housing price inflation. .ml users think if you talk about facts and reality you are part of the problem and that reality should be re-made such that private property no longer exists and every single person should leave in the same concrete housing blocks like they had in the USSR, or they should be shot.
