You can’t really do anything to improve local politics in LA because it’s utterly dominated by real estate interest groups, and also because the cops in LA need to get put in a denazification camp. Like the entire institution of policing is bad, but LA cops are genuinely insane.

The difference is that the UK doesn’t have year-round temperatures of 29 degrees celcius. You can get away with not sheltering people in the UK because the weather (usually) won’t kill them.

8·2 years agoA country who seemingly jumps from economic crisis to economic crisis, with no respite, and who’s economy is so utterly dominated by large landowners that it mirrors the antebellum South, is planning on cutting all ties to its 2nd biggest trading partner, whom they import more from than any other singular nation.

6·2 years agoAlso, wasn’t a whole bunch of previously russian ships suddenly being registered in Greece? Or am I thinking ofn something else? I just remember the whole “shadow fleet” thing was a major concern shortly after the sanctions on maritime insurance.

41·2 years agoProbably the closest you will find is a bunch of people (including yours truly) who commented during the very brief takeover period in 2021 that was genuinely incredible that the US had managed to create 0 effective government after propping up a puppet for 20 years. People were looking at it like with a certain level of schadenfreude and bemoaning the fact that the entire occupation was for naught, except allowing local opium growers time to export their goods to the big pharmaceutical companies, which probably helped cause the opiod crises that is ravaging poor, rural areas.
To me it seems like he is saying “Nobody should be made homeless for being gay/trans/other identify-related reasons, however if they are made homeless for reasons of poverty I want the cops to use a railgun to remove them”

22·2 years agoA friend of mine works with a lithuanian lady who is either doing a phd or already completed it (I’m bringing this up because I want to show that her brainworms go extremely deep and also that formal education on europe is dogshit), and she keeps complaining about seeing young people being “into” communism and making the nazi equivalence. I told said friend that anyone who talks about how nice the Germans were and how mean the soviets were, probably should be questioned about what exactly their family did that made the Germans so amendable.

22·2 years agoIsn’t Hawaii literally the Bluest state in the entire country? Like the Democrats win Hawaii with such margins that you’d think they would do something with it, but somehow all that amounts to is the dems giving blowjobs to hotel owners.

2·2 years agoDidn’t it take untill Moon Jae-in for South Korea to have a president actually finish their term and not go to prison? Seems like a hell of a democracy if almost every leader goes to jail for massive corruption and being a puppet for Samsung / Hanwha corporations.

who talked about his experience with the Kurds against ISIS / Daesh in the levant. The kurds more or less just picked up whatever was left of the villages that Isis was genociding, which included a bunch of 14-17 year olds whose entire families had been wiped out. Brace said that his group had no soldiers younger than 14, but some of the teens were so desperate.

1·2 years agoin tax-cases there is no difference between having had a debt forgiven, and receiving the lump sum. I think in my country at least it’s considered capital gains rather than salary, meaning it gets taxed at the porky rate rather than the worker rate, so at least that part is nice.

1·2 years agoOh okay. I think I was thinking of the Maldives or similar types of completely flat islands. As far as I know, global warming isn’t making a catastrophic volcanic eruption more or less likely on those islands, so I guess their plans are slightly smarter than I first credited.

urbanism@hexbear.net•The hate for rural/suburban areas is really bordering on malthusianism with the assumption that relocation to cities is the only option.English
1·2 years agoi mean, one of the easiest ways to get people to move out of those suburbs is for the cities they are attached to to stop subsidising every part of their infrastructure. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the main recommendations that Strong Towns make, at least as far as NotJustBikes has presented it, since the suburbs are insanely expensive infrastructure wise. So if you just begin actually pricing in all the externalities that are currently being forced upon the places with active economies, then the problem will likely revert with decent speed.

Trump made them believe that they were out of touch (which they were), but instead of doing any sort of introspection, they decided that it meant they had to get more right wing and thus began to hunt for the same type of right wing freaks as the National Review. Coincidentally, those people all hated Trump, but agreed with him on every piece of policy so you ended up with a bunch of right wingers who were even more out of touch than the pre-trump team.
