Linux@lemmy.ml•PSA: When people ask you "What distro should I use?", try pointing them here
14·2 years ago“I prefer a distribution which is supported by game publishers.” feels like it sets bad expectations considering it’s just “do you want a stable Debian/Ubuntu distro?” and ‘game publishers’ might be a little out of date with their wording/justification

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•ATTENTION: 1337X IS NO LONGER SAFE [Reposted from Reddit]
4·2 years agoThey’re not really backing their claim up though in regards to “related to admins” and “admins are deleting other people’s warnings”.
And as far as I know the torrent has been pulled even.

World News@lemmy.world•Don't overstate 1.5 degrees C threat, new IPCC head says
8·2 years agoWe’re definitely nowhere near “fuck it” levels, as the article says, we sure can make things a lot more awful if we decide now that we can’t do anything about it anyway.
But maybe we need a stronger example than… Bike lanes… Though I get the point he’s making.

6·2 years agoSometimes I check out /r/technology and /r/worldnews through libdirect proxy, as well as the slightly more occasional tech-support hunt, but I don’t feel the need to interact with it

Technology@kbin.social•Microsoft’s cloud ambitions for Windows could kill off desktop PCs – and sooner than we expected
1·2 years agoCould be very “useful” for VR hardware I think (for better or for worse)
As the article says, no doubt a snails-pace journey as W11 still needs to expire in 10 years at the very least

2·2 years agoSorry, (now edited) I had stressed it from the sub-title a bit as well
Clairvoidance@kbin.socialtoFediverse@kbin.social•This is why I like the fediverse. People aren’t desperate to be influencers. Found this post on Threads, and it’s sadcringe material.

Politics@kbin.social•The left must embrace law and order | Slavoj Zizek
4·2 years agoI think that misses the point of the post as Zizek argues the shaking of order as things are now will lead to more right wing authoritarianism.

PC Gaming@kbin.social•Nearly 40% of Linux gamers on Steam are on Steam Deck
4·2 years agoWith Linux still being 1.4% that’s actually a lot less steam decks bought than I thought there’d be. Or I guess something fucky could be going on with what i assume is the majority of people with a steamdeck, those with Windows and a Steamdeck
nah don’t worry, Manjaro users will tell you they use Manjaro

Technology@kbin.social•Meta’s Twitter competitor launches on July 6th, according to the App Store
1·2 years agoTwitter has shown that there is an audience for companies (and apparently presidents) engaging via public social media.
Corporations rely on algorithms to get attention on their eyes, and it’s especially convenient to have everyone on the internet on a ‘central hub’, where you can make sure the most people have a chance to get hooked on what you do (this is also the case for smaller creators like digital artists)
as Twitter proves unreliable I imagine corporations as well as smaller freelancers will work to give Meta’s alternative some legitimacy in the public’s eyes so that they’re not shit out of luck
Though Meta’s bleeding money as it is, they might not be the horse worth betting on anyway.
