Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How often are your windows open? What about during Winter? or during Summer? Do you open windows to let in fresh air?
3·6 days agoI’ve lived in my current home six years and I’m not even sure the windows are capable of opening. It’s wild to me that some people believe they’re gonna run out of oxygen if they don’t open a window

8·9 days agoNah, it’s a motor vehicle and should be treated as such.
So they want to put all of our SSA money into the stock market and hope that it generates enough profit to cover the declining workforce… I’m sure that 401Ks, social security, and banking IRAs all being dependent on the same stock market not failing isn’t a terrible idea.
I think this is the real answer. Individuals largely hate AI but corporations love it. It’s just a matter of time before some executive crashes a multi-billion dollar company into the ground because they trusted AI and then the rest of the chips will fall.
Also, the OP makes what I consider a bad assumption—that the US-centric economy will continue being the primary driving force in the world. Literally anyone can develop their own AI for virtually nothing these days. If China wanted they could create their own ASML and Nvidia and drive western markets to the ground in months.
I learned in chapters.
- Teen/young adult years I just got the basics down, how to cut meat and veggies depending on their application and making meals I grew up with and knew well.
- Twenties, mostly cooking in restaurants learning new recipes and commiting the “correct way” to memory while learning foods from other cultures
- Thirties, breaking out of my comfort zone and just making food that sounds like it’d work together instead of making what middle-of-the-road restaurants taught me. Lots of YouTube videos absorbing general concepts.
The biggest things I’ve learned is that food needs twice as much fat/oil as I think it does and three times as much salt. When I have bits of veggies I’m not gonna cook, I freeze them in a bag until I have enough to make a stock—it’s free flavor. Also, spice and season everything; I used to season my main ingredients and then just plop unseasoned ingredients on top thinking it’s fine (for example, an egg scramble needs salt and pepper added to both the eggs and the sautéed veggies)
That and the US being such a large market while having some of the worst internet in the developed world. Last I read only ¼ of the network is fiber

8·15 days agoI always find it amusing when baby boomers quote the expression “… strong men create good times, good times create weak men…” as if the children of ww2 weren’t the most coddled generation in history.
I know it’s not directly related to your comment but I always think about how impotent the US has proven to be the last 80 years

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta patented an AI that lets you keep posting after you dieEnglish
33·16 days agoWhat an intellectually dishonest title. You can’t keep posting after your death; your persona and all the relationships you spent a lifetime building become commodities for Meta to profit from

politics @lemmy.world•Trump-Appointed Judge Rules ICE Violated Constitutional Rights of Minnesota Detainees — Drops Hammer in Strict Order
101·17 days agoMaybe it’s me who just doesn’t understand the law, but it’s exhausting constantly seeing judges determine ICE is flagrently violating the law and all they do is say “oh now you’d better stop breaking the law”… Is it beyond the purview of the judiciary to impose actual penalties for wrongdoing?

News@lemmy.world•Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) suddenly drops unprecedented air restrictions over El Paso, southern New Mexico
64·19 days agoEl Paso + parts of New Mexico means Ft Bliss. That’s where the US Army/Air Force does nearly all of their munitions training. I wonder if ICE is getting a special training course bc that’s also about how long one lasts.
Eta: this is also the last stop soldiers make before forward deploying. They could have a large quantity of people they intend to deploy in the very near future. Good reason to keep eyes off the area with all the tensions in the middle east and wherever else Trump decides to go to war with this week.

News@lemmy.world•Kiswa on Jeffrey Epstein’s floor? New image shows sex offender standing on sacred Islamic cloth of Kaaba, sparks outrage
26·20 days agoI think a lot of people also missed that this wasn’t a regular prayer cloth that any Muslim would have in their home, this was from the Kaaba specifically. Millions of people travel from across the globe every year to pray here—this specific “rug” is essentially a piece of history and should have never been given away, especially to a zionist
Also, just a year or two ago they were preventing students from wearing masks at protests

The first thing I did when I got my pc was to uninstall OneDrive and set Proton as my cloud backup. Somehow, it seems my computer reverted my settings without my knowledge.
Paycheck to paycheck can be a pretty broad term. I worked at the bottom rung in healthcare scraping by and had to endure listening to people making 3x what I made talking about when their check was gonna hit the bank. It’s easy to be broke when you have a spending problem
