13·3 days agoFirst of all, i don’t think you’re tooting your own horn, you juuust stated you don’t have a car! So its unlikely you happen to have a horn lying about…
Intentional is a good description, but from what i read i want to add sincerity. Thats important, especially in a world of grift and propaganda.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Revealed: Secret plans to introduce media censorship in Australia
2·3 days agoThere are two parts of this system Peter Greste is chasing that make it a non-starter for me.
Before I go on, I definitely believe sometimes it is in the best interests of the Nation that information the media picks up isn’t publicly disclosed, names of active agents in the field would be one narrow example of that. And the impotous behind Peter Greste’s involvement seems like a genuine failing of our current system.
First part,
The DSMA Committee in Britain is run by the UK’s Ministry of Defence’s Director General for Security Policy comprised of senior representatives of the security services, former military staff, high-ranking government officials, press association chiefs, senior editors and journalists, which meets every six months. Representatives of the BBC, ITV, Sky News, The Times, Daily Telegraph, The Register as well as Harper Collins UK, are all members.
If Australia follows this model, then it, like the news-media bargaining code, favours and increases the power of establishment media/journalism over smaller independent media/journalism. Anything that backs in the incumbents of news-media in Australia has to be avoided. After-all there is probably about as much trust in the establishment media as there is in government in this country… so not much trust.
Secondly,
You say the same thing: we’ve got a document and we’re intending to publish it. [The D-Notice person] won’t be the expert in this field. So you can’t have the direct conversation that we did in America
Speaking to intermediaries is a surefire way for mistakes in both directions to occur, likely leading to habitual over-censoring. In a case where the ‘d-notice person’ is faced with the possibility of halting an important news story, or protecting perceived national security, the perceived national security will win each time.
Any system Peter Greste, et al advocates for should be like the US system, decentralised to the expert agencies who are far better placed to know the improtance of certain details.

3·3 days agoEveryone loves a map. I don’t know why they don’t make better use of maps in schools, so many things you can teach using maps!
Even that maths map that came out a few years back was great to look at, gave me a lot of understanding about how things broadly come together.

Perth / Western Australia@aussie.zone•WA government to buy private Perth hospital, scraps $1.6b convention centre facelift
1·3 days agoBah, link doesn’t work. But I can imagine their screeching.
I went to see if it was on the homepage, instantly saw toxic ANZAC worship (not saying respect for the ANZAC tradition is bad, just that particular brand of Stokes/Abbott ANZAC worship), then the typical article wheeling out the tired old line ‘government shit, business best’.
Same shit, different decade from that rag then, the journalists there must live in such a warped reality.

Perth / Western Australia@aussie.zone•Property price spike stretches buyers keen on coastal WA city
6·4 days agoIt is bloody beautiful down there.
Government should get into planning expanded public services now, i think the area from Albany up to Bunbury is going to become far more populous. Maybe making that part of WA look more like Queensland than the highly city centered other States and Territories.
At the very least they should be planning, and reserving rail corridors, for inter- and intra-city lines.

Perth / Western Australia@aussie.zone•WA government to buy private Perth hospital, scraps $1.6b convention centre facelift
1·4 days agoIt really does, that convention centre is fairly new, and has already cost a fuck-ton from the subsidence, due to it being built on what used to be the swan river. Leave it alone.
We have to move on with other parts of the city, if they can’t attract enough conventions/events for a place that big then i’d not be convinced some revamp is gona materially and help their situation. I’d be looking at the business model they’re trying to run with that venue.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats your hot take on something that doesnt matter at all?
7·6 days agoIn Western Australia we’ve been rolling out FOGO bins (Food and Garden organics waste), last summer i didn’t tie off one of the bags properly and there were maggots everywhere, spilling out of the bin.
I guess this could happen with general waste bins as well, so i suppose i’ve changed my attitude on the wrapping up waste to go in your bin idea. The only way i see around it is more home composting.
