1·2 years agoOnly Stallman fanatics and newly minted Open Source/Free Software initiates are that pedantic about it.
Someone used the wrong tool for the job. If an awk script gets more than a few dozen lines, it’s time to use another language/tool to process that data.

1·2 years agoI’ve been hearing this debate for nearly 32 years. It’s a useless argument.
The correct name for the # symbol is “octothorpe,” but how many people do you know who call it that? You’ll either hear it called the Pound sign (by us older folk) or the more modern Hash mark.
The fact is, Linux is both a kernel AND an OS.

2·2 years agoI post this stuff to, like, 9 different social media feeds. There’s a lot of cut once, paste everywhere else. I’ll adjust the links but not recognizing hashtags is a defect here. I’m not super keen on them, but they’re a defacto standard.

Every so often, my daughter asks me the question, “What’s your favorite thing to do?” For the last 10 years my answer is always the same thing:
