Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What’s something you own that has truly paid for itself?
1·15 days agoMine is a shark and has a different looking filter than that. They probably weren’t designed to be checked in the washing machine but it has worked every time I’ve done it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2·15 days agoIt’s a brush similar to a regular vacuum, a long thin tube with bristles. Like I said I clean the vacuum about once a week, including checking that everything spins like it’s supposed to. The wet/dry versions do look like they would be much more effective at keeping your house actually clean however when I bought mine several years ago those were still well over $1,000 and not yet a well-tested enough setup but I would have trusted it to have water going around my house without supervision. If my vacuum dies and I need to buy another one I will most likely buy a wet dry vac but I don’t see a reason to upgrade for now as long as mine keeps the majority of the mess away. It’s definitely not perfect, but a regular vacuum isn’t perfect even if you do it three times a day you still going to have dirty rugs that need to be washed and a hardwood floor that needs mopped. The dust collector being about 1-2 cups worth of dust and cat hair when I change it out each week makes me feel very confident that it helps keep my house cleaner than I would be able to on my own, and for the roughly $300 I spend on it over 4 years ago, well worth the price.

16·16 days agoMy robot vacuum! My robot vacuum with the little home dock tower thing that lets it dump its load and keep vacuuming! I had the original robot vacuums that didn’t have a dock to dump their garbage in and it helped some but mostly it needed to be cleaned more often than I would have vacuumed my house without it, the newer ones with big receptacles are so worth it, once a week I dump his container and change his filters and maybe give him a little wipe down with a dust rag and he’s happy as a clam. I bought a set of replacement filters so that I can take the old filters out and use my big vacuum on them to get most of the dust and then chuck them in the washing machine, once they’re clean they go in the filter drawer and I just rotate filters once a week.

5·16 days agoMy litter robot! I got mine refurbished so it was a little cheaper. Not only is it worth it to not have to scoop all the time and somehow still have a stinky house, it has saved me TONES on litter. I buy one 40lb bag for $20 a month and that’s more than plenty, whereas before it would be at least 2.5 bags a month. All that and still I would buy all sorts of different scent absorbers and diffusers and good smelly type things to try and mask it and it never worked. So I’m saving about 30 bucks a month on cat litter and probably 40 bucks a month on good smellies and filters AND my house actually smells nice. Totally worth it, even with the almost $500 price tag for the refurbished machines. Just with the savings on litter and smellies it probably paid for itself within a year.

46·17 days agoMy power tools. I’m not a professional but doing all the diy home repairs myself with the right tools for the job has probably saved me tens of thousands of dollars in contractors. And believe me when I say get the right tools for the job, it’s worth it. You can fight with the wrong tool for hours trying to get a job done poorly or do it right in minutes with the right tools for the job. Not only is your time valuable but having the project done correctly the first time means you don’t have to pay to fix it a second time. Even if you’re the one doing it the second time, you still have to spend the time ripping out the garbage you put in and pay for the materials to do it right the second time.

27·17 days agoMy sous vide, 100% I have never gotten a steak from a restaurant that was better than what I make at home with my sous vide and a good thick iron pan. It cost $100 and it probably paid for itself with one package of steaks from Costco.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some Movies that School (including summer school or after school programs) showed you that you probably would've never watched otherwise? Did you enjoy them?
6·2 months agoFlowers for Algernon and FUCK NO I DID NOT LIKE IT AND WOULD NEVER HAVE CHOSEN YO WATCH IT IF NOT FORCED!!!
It is good to know that Lemmy is correct. The answers were, mostly, either maruchan or shin black, both of which are correct. the maruchan is what you pick when you are broke/ sick and aren’t sure you’ll keep anything down, and shin black is what you pick when you want good ramen not from a ramen shop. $2 USD per packet is a little steep for not sure it’s gonna sit well. I have a very picky tummy though so maybe most people have fewer issues with feeling guilty about “losing” pricy food.
When someone says that they are overweight from overeating and that they are trying to eat less to be less overweight, and that food noise in their brain is making that difficult, maybe telling them to eat whatever they want whenever they want is not good advice.
My weight loss wins have all been tied to various medications for various reasons.
For context have been overweight my entire life, went from 85lbs in 5th grade to 250 in 7th, puberty hit my metabolism like a freight train. I also had a highly food addictive culture in my home growing up, food was comfort and love and attention and a bandaid and fun. To this day when we get together to do something it’s ALWAYS food centered, never activity centered. Doesn’t help that we were all unmedicated for depression and we’re all now discovering we’re ADHD and autistic so food was one of the few reliable sources of dopamine.
To sum up, depressed, unbalanced hormones, addictive personality and undiagnosed mental health issues combined with the worst environment for healthy living imaginable, paved the way for me being 345 lbs by 27. The most frustrating thing was I was active. I have a physically demanding job and would have solid chunks where I was actually going to the gym 3-4 times a week for months on end, but I NEVER lost anything significant. Maybe 10 lbs over the course of 2-3 months if I was lucky. But even going to the gym and eating strictly the weight would fluctuate all over the place. no matter what diet I was on, no matter how active I was there seemed to be no measurable tie between my behavior with food and exercise, to progress on the scale.
A combination of life events had me talking to my doctors about my mental health and I started taking low dose birth control non stop to halt my cycle because of pmdd, taking Wellbutrin and for mood, focus, and a more controlled sleep schedule, and naltrexone for addiction suppression. I wasn’t addicted to drugs or alcohol, just food.
With the halting of my cycle I stopped having the waves of uncontrollable anger, pain, or sadness that would make me seek comfort in food, but I still had the non-stop metronome of food noise in my brain at all times. When I added Wellbutrin and naltrexone to the birth control the RELIEF I felt when the base sound floor of food noise in my brain dropped to almost nothing was euphoric and also immensely validating. I finally understood that my brain had been actively sabotaging me for my entire life and that other people don’t have to deal with their brains screaming at them that they need food 24/7, and wouldn’t you fucking know it, when the addictive drill sergeant of snacks shuts the fuck up in your brain, you stop thinking about food all the time!
For the first time in my life I could think about literally anything else without intrusive thoughts about food cutting into my mind regularly. The shame of never being able to control my thoughts about food was instantly gone. That combo of Wellbutrin, naltrexone and non-stop birth control helped me lose 75 lbs and finally feel like I had some modicum of control over my body and mind, but then I got stuck again. Not being focused on eating all the time and not having a cycle that would sabotage any hope of keeping to an effective diet was immensely helpful but my body was still programmed to hold on to every single excess bit of fat it had with tooth and claw. Damn the genetics that survived the potato famine!
I won’t be surprised if people come out of the woodwork to tell me that none of my success is real because of the next medication I used but it worked and it’s been working for the past 3 years. My doctor gave me a sample of ozempic to try and I lost another 20 lbs in 6 weeks. To be fair I reacted very strongly to that medication, I was sick and tired and felt god-awful on the smallest possible dose for the first few months but every time I would get on the scale at the end of the week before I took the next shot I would be down a few more pounds. So I weighed the cost of the symptoms with the benefit of the weight loss and I decided the symptoms were worth it. That was 3.5 years ago ish and I’ve been on semaglutide (ozempic/wegovy are the name brands but I’ve been using a compounded version for the majority of that), or more recently tirzepatide, ever since. I still take the Wellbutrin and naltrexone and birth control, but adding the semaglutide/ tirzepatide has brought me down below 200lbs for the first time in my adult life. I’m very tall and quite strong so my healthy weight should be around 175 but we’ll see. I’ve never been there so I have no idea what it’ll look or feel like.
I know nobody likes to hear that medications are the way to go. “You should just be able to be strong enough to not need the help” but I tried my entire conscious life to not be overweight and was never able to accomplish it on my own. I always felt worthless because of it. The instant I had the help that my brain and body needed to be regulated, to be HEALTHY, I dropped almost all the excess weight I’d hated carrying my entire life and I finally feel unashamed about my eating habits and my body.
Like I said, I won’t be surprised if people jump down my throat for using medication as help with my mental health and weight loss. But you know what? If other people think I’m a weak fake POS for needing help, they’re welcome to think that. I could not give less of a fuck. They can go be miserable toxic human beings somewhere fucking else and take that purity testing bullshit with them because I’m finally happy with who I am and how I live and I will not be sorry for using medication to get there.

25·5 months agoJust a note: fascists do not believe the things they say. There is no point in arguing with them or criticizing their claims with logic or facts. There is no benefit in pointing out their hypocrisy because they were never presenting those points in good faith. No gotchas work, no clever retorts and no amount of carefully compiled data will be effective against the reasons they claim are the justification for their hate and bigotry, because the hate came first, the justification is an afterthought. They believe the hate, not the justification and no amount of time or effort or proof will logic them out of their hatred. No evidence will change their minds because the things they say are not truly held beliefs. So, don’t engage. They want you to waste your time arguing with them about their obviously wrong claims, in part because it wastes your time and energy and in part because taking their lies seriously gives them legitimacy. There is no point, no benefit to trying to disprove them. As far as I’ve seen the best way to rattle them is to accurately describe their behavior. That’s all. Don’t listen to their arguments, don’t engage with their talking points, don’t be sidetracked by their attempts to waste your energy. Focus on the core of whatever issue you’re concerned with and don’t be sidetracked. For instance, the whole “roman salute” conversation? Bull shit. Obviously. But the more they got people talking about it the more energy people wasted trying to get them to admit the truth. They knew they were lying, that’s the point. Their goal was to waste people’s time with trivial nitpicks. Do. Not. Engage. Focus on your goals, the points that actually matter in a discussion. Things like: It’s irrelevant who started what in Gaza, genocide is wrong. It’s irrelevant if George Floyd was a bad person or not, people shouldn’t be murdered by the police. It’s irrelevant if there has ever been a single instance where a trans person did anything inappropriate in a public bathroom, they are people who deserve the right to exist in public without fear. It’s irrelevant what a woman was wearing or if she was drunk or was flirting, there is no excuse for rape. The list goes on and on and their disingenuous points are always only an obfuscation of the core of the argument, which is usually that all people are people and deserve the right to exist safely in this world. Their points will try to create some reason why certain people don’t deserve that. They are wrong and they will say any lie to try to manipulate people into believing otherwise.
I believe Haskell makes you the pope of nerds.

6·5 months agoIt’s the vibe. TotK just… Feels more industrial, and less clean and hopeful. BotW was just so pretty and you HAD to walk to places or glide the first time. The machines in TotK made it so easy to skip the nature that it felt less rewarding to play. Like, if you could just snap your fingers and have the perfect house immediately with no work, no effort, the house wouldn’t feel as rewarding as one you built with your own skill.
