The type of show where you can show up wearing bright red earmuffs from Harbor Freight and not stick out as “that one guy wearing bright red earmuffs” because that describes at least 4 or 5 other people at the show.

Technology@lemmy.world•French protestors grieved Windows 10 with a mock funeral outside Microsoft HQ, complete with a coffinEnglish
10·6 days agoMy PC is only like, 5 years old and Windows 11 doesn’t support it. Windows 10 ran smoothly, it does RTX, modern games run fine on it, the most graphically intensive AAA games run a little poorly but still run nonetheless, and I can always lower the graphics settings to get better performance. It’s certainly more powerful and higher spec than a lot of the office PCs that do run Windows 11. Buuuut the motherboard doesn’t have a TPM 2.0 chip so it’s archaic e-waste as far as Microsoft is concerned. It’s been running Linux just fine for the last year and a half or so, and not once have I ever felt that my PC is too old and needs to be upgraded or replaced.
Why do AI bros get so defensive when any single aspect of AI or its implementation is criticized, as though criticism of noise polluting, resource leeching, hardware hoarding datacenters owned by tech oligarchs whose only prerogative is making the most money possible and obtaining the largest amount of power over people they possibly can is necessarily a statement that AI should never exist or be used in any capacity for any reason ever?

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to check pc for spyware and can you say there is no spyware or is it probabilityEnglish

It’s in the AUR as klitoris-gtk-git. Or is it klitoris-qt-git? There might have been a klitoris-qt-bin but the maintainer stopped updating that one like a year ago and nobody’s picked it up. Actually now that I think about it none of the AUR versions are up to date, you gotta get it straght from github. Ah, no wait that one’s a fork, the OG is on sourceforge. Or was it gitlab? No no no actually I remember now, it used to be up on gitlab but they moved over to GNU Savannah, so the gitlab version is out of date. Oh by the way it relies on old versions of libraries and other dependencies that no distros actually have in their repos anymore. It won’t compile with the newer versions of those dependencies and they don’t provide a binary. People are complaining about that on the Issues page but it’s only developed by like one guy and he doesn’t even know why the newer versions won’t work he just knows it works on his system. Still refuses to provide a binary though. Oh right there’s that fork I mentioned, that might work. Ah wait nevermind that was an attempt of making a gtk version of klitoris but the developer abandoned that project unfinished and hasn’t been seen since 2022.
You can use Solaar, which works okay but I can’t rebind the side buttons on my mouse. Fuck Logitech for being a featured exhibitor at the 2025 Border Security Expo though. As far as I’m concerned they don’t deserve to continue to exist as a company.
Sounds like “pretty big Ritalin dose you missed” to me
It’s a little crazy to me how the most popular tech youtuber struggles so much with Linux, meanwhile fucking PewDiePie, who’s not known for being particularly bright, has been making videos about Linux and selfhosting and how fun it is to configure his system lol.

11·25 days agoIt’s infinitely harder to make anonymous one-off/throwaway Signal accounts, so they have different use cases for me. I have one phone number, so I only have one Signal account with my real name on it to talk to my friends and family. If I want to privately message someone who I’m not quite sure I can trust with my identity there’s no way in hell I’m giving them my Signal.
This Lunchables was the shit as a kid. None of the other ones even came close.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I Spoke To The Developer Of The Systemd Birth Date PR - YouTubeEnglish
13·1 month agoAdding a birthday field is not privacy invading in itself the same way brandishing a knife is not assault in itself.
Context matters. I’ve held knives before and it was completely inocuous. I’ve used knives to chop vegetables, to spread butter, to carve something out of wood, etc. If I pulled out a knife while in a heated argument with someone that’d be a whole other story, and I don’t think “I was just holding the knife, is it illegal to hold knives now?” would exonerate me from accusations of intent or threat to assault someone.
In any other context adding a date of birth field would be inocuous. You’re not required to use it after all. But in this context as I understand it, it is explicitly infrastructure for age verification, even if it is not age verification in itself.

71·2 months agoI see this topic come up often in conversations about degoogled Android and it makes me wonder what if anything I’m missing out on by just using cash/card for payments, cause not once have I been at checkout and thought to myself “man, I wish I could do this with my phone instead” but people talk about this like it’s almost a dealbreaker that makes it hard for them to seriously consider switching to Graphene or Lineage or whatever.

Linux@programming.dev•Why Flatpak Won and Snap and AppImage Didn't. - Cameron KnauffEnglish
1·2 months agoThat’s why I whenever I download an appimage that I intend to use somewhat regurarly, I typically make a .desktop file for it in /usr/share/applications so it shows up in my app menu or rofi or dmenu or whatever and I don’t have to go looking for it. It also helps to have a folder you toss them all into
