I think there’s a fine line between collaboration and committee (members of a band can collaborate to make good music). But capitalism definitely works against art.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I'd like to ask everyone, which movie have you rewatched more than three times?
2·24 days agoFifth Element was at the top of my movies that I would stop and watch when scrolling cable channels alongside Top Secret, Clue, and Shawshank.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Ford tells students to not pick 'basket-weaving courses' in wake of OSAP cuts
1·2 months agoYou seem to be arguing for choosing a major with some job prospect, but Ford seems to be arguing for not taking any courses that aren’t directly beneficial to some economic purpose.
I disagree with Ford’s stance at least. As an old tech person, my non-tech uni courses were most beneficial to my overall capabilities in my tech job, at least in the long run. Creative writing, ethics, history, and tort law were things I took because they were interesting (to me at least). None of these had much relevance to tech as far as I could see, but I’ve been much better off for them.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Oatly banned from using word ‘milk’ to market plant-based products in UKEnglish
6·2 months agoThe thing I find funniest about that is that milk of magnesia is rather new to the English language (1880 according to the Oxford English dictionary). Meanwhile terms like almond milk that are “too confusing” have been in the English language since Middle English.

Very cool. It reminds me of Esao Andrews’ style.

News@lemmy.world•'Worst of the Worst'? DOJ Figures Show 97.4% of 614 Detained Immigrants in Chicago Had No Criminal Record
8·5 months agoIt’s even worse if they’re using “criminal record” the same way the FBI has historically (arrested but not necessarily convicted on a felony charge).
I don’t have up to date numbers, but c.2016 the FBI considered ~29% of Americans to have a criminal record.

3·5 months agoA grand jury is a sort of sanity check on a charge, and does not count towards the trial. It is basically “with these facts (provided only by the prosecution), is there enough probable cause to move a case to trial?”. Double jeopardy in the 5th amendment has specific protections from going to trial multiple times or from getting multiple punishments for a crime.

Most app devs fuck it up (especially the lazy bastards that just throw everything in /opt and call it a day). I like being the dev who won’t let my code ship until everything fits nicely into FHS 3.0.
