  • a big part of it was people seeing first hand the Soviet’s sabotaging the CNT-FAI’s efforts, which I imagine was part of what turned Orwell against communists later in his life.

I still contend that if the Soviet’s supported the Syndicalists as much as the Nazis supported the Nationalists, CNT-FAI would have won the war.

  • yeah people don’t realize just how insidious advertisement really is.

your phone isn’t “reading your mind,” advertisers have such a comprehensive model of you that they’re able to predict your thoughts with an incredibly high degree of accuracy before you even have them. There’s also obviously a bit of confirmation bias in play, you only remember the times they got it right as opposed to the times they guessed wrong.

  • nah I miss VHS. I kinda see the era of VHS as similar to the PS2-Xbox 360 gaming era. It was when the ratio of production costs to how much profit a movie needed to make were juuuust right, such that you had a wide variety of studios taking wild swings at different ideas. However, it wasn’t quite so easy as the modern Internet area, where anyone could produce video content. I feel like “good” bad movies just don’t get made anymore; they’re either so amateur that it feels unfair to make fun of them because it’s clearly people who know only the basics of filmmaking if that, or it’s a studio release. There’s of course a handful of exceptions, like Neil Breen, but the volume is so much lower than the VHS era.

my one concern is that I wouldn’t want a salad dressing touching my fries. especially since I tend to prefer a light vinagrette.

I wonder if such a sauce exists that could function as both salad dressing and fry sauce. probably something starting with a thousand island base?

  • Been pretty good. swapped over to Bazzite, which does just about everything I need for a daily driver. Only real annoyance is my VPN. I haven’t been able to successfully connect through the openvpn configs that PIA provides, so I’ve been setting it up through terminal every time I log in. I think if I really sat down I could set it up to autologin, but it only “costs” me like 30 seconds and sometimes I like to connect to a server that allows port forwarding instead of a non-PF closer server. I also like getting to make the choice of which server I connect to vs autologging in to the lowest latency server.

I still have to use Windows 11 for work though, and holy shit do I prefer running two commands in terminal when I login to dealing with all the dumb fuckin bloat that OS has when I go home.

It’s probably less SAD than my fellow Americans, but still pretty rough. I don’t drink sugary drinks and heavily limit the amount of fast food I consume. When I do go out to eat, I stick to local restaurants; I haven’t had any of the major chains in years. I can’t afford red meat anymore, so my main sources of protein are tinned fish or chicken breasts. Those chicken breasts are part of the problem though, I buy lots of breaded chicken cuts that I can just throw in an air fryer. It’s not Tyson, so a little bit better, but still probably not great for me. I also do lots of boxed pastas, usually with canned veggies added in, neither of which I think are that healthy really.

Part of my issue is that I just don’t enjoy cooking. Mom hated it too, and I think that rubbed off on me during childhood. I make food pretty purely for sustenance, and see it as a chore.
