Europe@feddit.org•Spain Moves to Ban Smoking in Stadiums and Bar TerracesEnglish
13·4 months agoFinally. I really hope Germany does this soon. The social stigma against smokers and their inconsiderate habits is one of the biggest things I miss from Canada.

Europe@feddit.org•EU approves draft Mercosur trade deal with ‘robust’ protections for farmersEnglish
3·5 months agoFrom the article
For example, only a quota of beef imports from Mercosur, equal to 1.5 percent of EU production, will be subject to a preferential 7.5-percent levy. […] Additional imports will face tariffs of up to 50 percent, he added.
This may drive more demand for meat production South America, but those quotas will limit that impact by quite a bit.

Europe@feddit.org•EU approves draft Mercosur trade deal with ‘robust’ protections for farmersEnglish
2·5 months agoI’m cautiously hopeful about this. I think a lot of the agricultural concerns in both directions are quite valid (i.e. impact on Europe’s ability to domestically feed itself, and impact on the amazon and other South American forests), but there’d also be a lot of major benefits on both sides, so I hope we can find a way to make it happen while lessening the negative impacts.
France is already in such a tumultuous political situation right now, I wonder if this’ll fly under the radar there, or be more fuel on the fire.

Europe@feddit.org•US startup Lyten to buy bankrupt European battery maker NorthvoltEnglish
2·5 months agoVW has their own rapidly maturing battery cell production, so I suspect they just decided they didn’t need to buy Northvolt. They probably already got all the IP they needed anyways.

6·10 months agoI recently switched of Dropbox in favour of Hetzner’s hosted Nextcloud deployment and I’m very happy. One step at a time, I’ll work towards being rid of corporate US tech.
Also, if anyone here is using Notion, you should check out Suite Numerque’s Docs which is an open source competitor being developed by the French, German, and Netherlands governments. It’s looking very promising. There’s scratchpad here you can use to try it out.

Europe@feddit.org•China, Europe and UK should form climate coalition apart from US, energy expert saysEnglish
10·1 year agoChina is pretty serious about getting their renewables going, mostly for energy independance reasons. I think they can be convinced to cooperate with future climate goals if enough care is taken.
Of course, if they don’t cooperate, then yes, we need to move along without them.

Europe@feddit.org•Canada expected to divert aluminium to Europe after US tariffsEnglish
3·1 year agoUnfortunately, this will not be over in 4 years. The American people have proven that they are unreliable, cruel, and stupid.
Even if someone sane takes office in 4 years it will maybe just give us a 4 year pause until the next lunatic comes in. There can be no long term plans or cooperation with the USA.

Europe@feddit.org•Canada expected to divert aluminium to Europe after US tariffsEnglish
32·1 year agoIf there’s one good thing that’ll hopefully come out of this mess, it’s less reliance on the USA and Canada being brought closer to Europe.
A nice one in my city (Cologne) is revamping some flood protections. Since I recently moved into a ground floor apartment near the Rhine, I appreciate that one a lot!

Europe@feddit.org•[Meta] Preparing for a surge in users when American tariffs are announcedEnglish
12·1 year agoTarrifs don’t affect Reddit or Lemmy directly. The indirect effects will come from the fact that trade wars usually cause a surge in consumers trying to avoid products and services from the unfriendly nation.
In this case, I think at least some European Redditors will be wanting to replace American social media platforms with European alternatives, and so will be looking again at Lemmy.
Good point about posting to the main channel, will do.

If you were paying attention it shouldn’t be surprising. Privacy is the sort of thing that Germans generally get very worked up about.
