1·17 days agoYeah, this was a fresh db. I think it had to do with other instances thinking mine was dead. Things have started to come in as expected now, so hopefully everything works from here (🤞)

3·30 days agoThunar = 🐐
Although, the only reason I use it is because when i made the switch many moons ago, i was following this guy’s tutorial on setting up i3 and he recommended thunar. Never looked back (although, at this point i think its more about the ui than any functional difference)

Fediverse@lemmy.world•How decentralized Bluesky is compared to the Fediverse.English
5·2 months agoOkay yes this makes sense. Although, honestly i think I’d prefer the AP method of doing it because BlueSky sends ALL content to all nodes, so it’s MUCH less cost effective to join with a private server.
I run my own lemmy instance, so i know the data volume since 2023 has been probably like a terabyte or so. But, with BlueSky I’d have to account for the data volume of all users on the platform as a whole, bringing the data volume way up to tens of terabytes (a guess based almost entirely on nothing).
So it really boils down to yes I agree that AP has problems with data accessibility, but I’d prefer that over unnecessary data redundancy

Fediverse@lemmy.world•How decentralized Bluesky is compared to the Fediverse.English
9·2 months ago… but at least the rest of their system is actually substantially more decentralized architecturally than AP is.
In the blog post you linked, neither the author or myself came to your conclusion:
However, I stand by my assertions that Bluesky is not meaningfully decentralized and that it is certainly not federated according to any technical definition of federation we have had in a decentralized social network context previously. To claim that Bluesky is decentralized or federated in its current form moves the goalposts of both of those terms, which I find unacceptable.

1·2 months agoSaw it on Friday, the first 75% was fucking fire. Towards the end it started to feel like absurdist comedy a little bit but i still enjoyed it

3·2 months agoFWIW, i also have a great home theater and media library set up. But, the AMC a list subscription is genuinely worth it. $26/mo for 4x movies a week (any format) is such a crazy good deal.
I go to the theaters at least twice a week now, and it’s honestly great. My HT might be good, but its not IMAX good & having a few new movies to choose from vs thousands of options to stream is a win when going with a group too
In a general sense? No, i don’t think most people require a lesson
But I’m deadass about the lesson, we learned how to read a map, use the map scale, different types of maps, etc etc
Do they not teach this in all schools? I definitely learned map reading in grade school, and I’m Gen Z so being able to read a map was never a necessity in my life
The blurry image appears to depict an animal, and based on the suggested search results, it could potentially be a ferret, hamster, bobcat, cougar, or red fox. Given the shape and coloring, it most closely resembles a ferret.
Im gonna go ahead and say: absolutely no idea that picture is blurry as hell
I don’t doubt that, I’m saying this more because there are additional routes that i had to configure in NPM to get lemmy working properly. This may be where OP is having issues, you can probably set them up in CF too but I have no idea.
Are you pointing cloudflare directly to Lemmy? I have mine going from cloudflare to Nginx Proxy Manager configured to serve Lemmy.
There is some additional configuration necessary for a reverse proxy in front of Lemmy, which is potentially where things are getting messed up for you?

17·4 months agomight easily become a nationwide avalanche
Anecdotally, I have fairly non-political coworkers in other states that are hyping up Mamdani. His reach across Gen Z is honestly insane and people are even making TikTok/Instagram hype edits of him all the time

Movies@lemmy.world•[Spoilers] The Ugly Stepsister (2025) DiscussionEnglish
2·4 months agoIm glad you liked it!! Your point about Agnes is valid, I guess there’s also the argument that she was swept away by the royal life and left everything (including her father) behind? It’s been a while, so I’m fuzzy on some of the smaller details of the movie.
I think you’re right about Alma but its also a fine line between her being a voice of reason and it being too overwhelming. I think it probably could have had more of her perspective on the abuse Elvira was going through.
I really like this movie though, it’s been a few months since release and I still think its probably one of the better movies to have come out this year. But, I also think that these types of movies are the ones I enjoy the most: humanizing/contextualizing people situations that society has a preconceived notion towards. The only other example that I can think of is LVT’s Nymphomaniac, but that’s a tough one to recommend due to the extremely graphic content and the fact that its like six hours between both halves lol.
I hope this movie wins some awards, doesn’t need to be picture of the year or anything but I think it’s a standout amongst its competitors this year.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Alright fine I admit it, I want to learn Linux
2·4 months agoNo worries :) everyone starts somewhere.
The other commenter covered the terminology so to your point about being on Nvidia:
I know we don’t like Reddit but here. Seems to be YMMV and you’ll never know if you don’t try. Also possible that the things that are buggy aren’t things you use/care about

Linux@lemmy.ml•Alright fine I admit it, I want to learn Linux
2·4 months ago¯\_(ツ)_/¯
FWIW I run Ubuntu and do some gaming. Haven’t hit any issues, and I’ve run multiple AAA games on release (TLOU, Indiana Jones, Hogwarts Legacy, GoW 2018) as well as other, lighter, titles like Cities Skylines 2, Asetto Corsa, Project Cars, American Truck Simulator
I’m sure there are bugs that I haven’t experienced, and my system is probably newer/higher performance than the average person + i chose parts with Linux in mind. But based on my experience, I wouldn’t tell someone to jump into a less user friendly distro because of problems I myself haven’t run into. Much better to try one, see if you hit an issue, then jump rather than doing the hard one up front

Linux@lemmy.ml•Alright fine I admit it, I want to learn Linux
2·4 months agoConsider your library: most games will be able to run fine on Linux. However, if you predominantly play online multiplayer games which require anticheat you should check compatibility on ProtonDB.
Second, consider your hardware: if your GPU is AMD you’re good to go. Nvidia might have issues (not sure if this has been resolved since I last had to look into it).
Finally, choose a distro: I’d recommend Ubuntu or anything Ubuntu-based. There’s a lot of mixed answers in the Linux community and definitely a ton of hate for Ubuntu. However, as someone who has been running Linux for nearly a decade at this point, there are a few key points:
-
Ubuntu is debian based, so it’s extremely stable(but not as slow to update)
-
Ubuntu is very beginner friendly, and you won’t need to touch the terminal if you don’t want to
-
Everyone hates on snaps, but for you I don’t think you’ll run into an issue with it.
Personally, I steer towards debian based distros for my devices as well because I’d rather spend time messing with the software I’m running or other things NOT debugging why my config is suddenly shitting the bed
-

Unfortunately, doesn’t seem to be available for streaming. So, you’ll probably have to find alternative methods
I mean, the only alternative is physical media of course ;)
