Or Prince of Egypt which has one of the best soundtracks and great animation. I’m not a Christian but even I know about the damn plague that got those little Egyptian kids.

Explain Like I'm Five@lemmy.world•ELI5: How is Amazon able to sell me books so much cheaper than brick and mortar book stores in my areaEnglish
1·2 years agoSure, but in that previous time period, they didn’t make a profit but were able to destroy the brick and mortar bookstore. So I guess it would be more honest to say they demolished the bookselling industry and now can argue for whatever deals they want because the only other bookstores are weakened.
Arkansas grows primarily rice and soybeans, so I don’t understand why it says anything about cows. There are some cow farms, sure, but by and large it is rice and soybeans. And honestly, it’s mostly rice. They grow almost half of the country’s crop.

Explain Like I'm Five@lemmy.world•ELI5: How is Amazon able to sell me books so much cheaper than brick and mortar book stores in my areaEnglish
14·2 years agoAmazon does not make any profit from their books. They are able to sell them cheaply because they sell them at a loss. They weren’t even profitable for a long time and maintained thanks to investors. Basically, Bezos sold the idea of the future of his store’s worth. And it worked.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Social differences even between coasts are massive
1·2 years agoIt took me a while to figure out. Like I knew Southerners can be mean and judgy, but I didn’t think about how until I traveled to other places and saw how much more straightforward people are. It’s nice when kindness is kindness and there’s no underlying meaning.

2·2 years agoIt’s a subtly, yeah. There’s a lot of reading between the lines along, which is annoying if you’re not used to it.

31·2 years agoGrowing up in the South is learning to be mean by way of looking nice.
Like…stale or just…weird? I don’t know how to describe it. If it only smells like glass or cleaning such, it’s good. Anything else is bad.
Gotta smell the inside of a cup or bowl when taking it out of the pantry. If it smells wrong, I have to wash it first. I don’t know why.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•10 days after 3rd party reddit app shutdown, Lemmy's top 10 instances combine for a thriving userbase of 234,000English
15·3 years agoNot really. They never wanted a large instance and didn’t want to become a Reddit replacement. I see them more like a federated Tildes, honestly.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what would you do if you have a time machine
5·3 years agoWouldn’t they deny your money because of the dates? You’d have to ensure you only have cash from pre-2003.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that In 2018, A hacker broke into people’s routers (100,000 of them) and patched their vulnerabilities up so that they couldn’t be abused by other hackers.English
3·3 years agoI think up to season 5 are fine. Season 6 is starts the downhill trash spiral. Season 5 also ends well enough you could watch until that point and move on with your life. A few holes left but your own imagination would be a better ending.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Does it feel like the fediverse is exclusively used by older tech nerds?English
3·3 years agoSame. 30s, healthcare, no linux. Not even tech savvy at all, but I can follow directions well enough.
Lexus cars. Every time some terrible driving is happening around me, it is one of them. I literally cannot count how many times I’ve almost been hit by one of them not stop at streetlights or stop signs or not slowing down for the pedestrian (me!) in the crosswalk. That commercial where the lexus driver drives over the man’s papers just solidified what sort of asshole drives those cars.

4·3 years agoLike all social media, you have to curate it. I follow hashtags for cats, books, writing, fandoms, etc. The rage is minimum then because my homepage doesn’t have politics or news. I actually do follow a couple of news sources, but their stuff is surrounded by an ocean of fun things so it’s not nearly as bad.
This is one of mine, too. My partner and I used to work for this store that sold used instruments and sound equipment. She told one of the testers it was my favorite song, so for six months, any time he tested something, he would play it. Randomly one day he came up to me and asked if I enjoyed the music he’d been using because I never said anything, and I explained that I hated that song. He was absolutely shocked and then laughed and told me what my partner had told him. It was a good prank, despite my suffering.

I actually think about this. All those houses that are streets away from the beach are going to make so much more in the future because the beach will move.
