Japanese Language@sopuli.xyz•Would native speakers still understand words that are basically the same in Japanese as English?English
4·1 year agoI think it depends on the person you’re speaking to and how good they are at understanding accents. Because that’s essentially what you are describing. When someone says a word in English using pronunciation guidelines from their native language, you hear that as an accent. The same would be true here, even though the words are loan words. They are used to hearing it through their own pronunciation guidelines, so it might take them a while to decipher it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What rule or rules would you add to the ten commandments of web etiquette?English
9·1 year agoWild assertion that these are semi-famous with only just over 4k views on the original post. And on DA in 2021 no less. I’ve seen no name YouTubers with higher subscriber counts.
- Always err on the side of scepticism when reading things online, especially when those things assert themselves as truth.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the difference between a man and a parasite?English
45·1 year agoWould you kindly answer this yourself?
A man determines his own answers, the parasite seeks forums.
Sins like what though? Do you need the threat of eternal punishment to be a good person or keep from killing someone?

1·1 year agoThe site probably wants to change its name! It’s a good pun, but… Maybe attracting the wrong audience
Cause the dude is on his fourth whiny doomer account and didn’t like that people were calling him out on the last post. So he deleted it and made a new one to get less undesirable answers.

18·1 year agoDefinitely AI, the characters on all the signs are complete nonsense. Well, most of them. Did okay with some of the basic hiragana, but otherwise it’s artifacted nonsense.

66·2 years agoThis is the sort of thing that would break me if I were to believe in god in the first place, man. Like, like religion or not, this dude devoted his life to an entity that has a “plan” and then his sweet daughter dies in an accident that his other kids were also present for and participants in. How could you believe after that? Fuck. Hope they make it out of this as well as they can.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Writers of Lemmy, how do you do outining?English
8·2 years agoPlug for something like Obsidian here. I recently started a new novel and the ability to divide everything into folders and sections that I can link to within my writing has been invaluable.
If it’s been a while since I referenced a place or event or character, I can write their name and link out to their dedicated page full of info and reference material on them. If I have something I think of on the fly that I want to remember, I can create a new reference page and link to it, or add it to an existing page whenever I need to .
The organization is a game changer. I write chapter by chapter, sometimes bouncing around in the timeline, and stitch everything together as I finalize a section.

Honestly, I don’t think the second one is a mess (except punctuation). I think it just conveys - or at least suggests - that something out of the ordinary is happening. It takes mundane things and makes you question them, given the extra attention given to the normal things like a name or place. Sounds like John maybe isn’t his real name and maybe he’s going to this store for something other than groceries.
