it seems like one of the key defining principals of the fediverse is platform evolution - mastodon, bluesky, and lemmy are just going to be footnotes in history.

PR is far more geographically isolated from the mainland than anywhere other than Hawaii (and other outlying islands like Guam), and they also get a lot more sun than the mainland. going big into solar will result in more energy/less downtime when the next hurricane ravages their shores.
eh… yes and no. I’ve lived in southern Louisiana and have been to the bayou any number of times - for the most part, the people that live there have houses on stilts as they deal with annual flooding from hurricanes - they also, seeming each and every one of them, own multiple boats and/or other watercraft. no, they’ll be fine. the cities in southern Louisiana will be really fucked if they dont build seawalls, but they will - probably. eventually, and likely too late, but it’ll happen - the Port of New Orleans is critical infrastructure, vital for international trade.

eh, I disagree. a personal vehicle can (generally doesnt because traffic is a thing) provide a sense of freedom. there’s a certain romantic appeal to having your own vehicle and there’s certainly freedom in an open road - if you ignore the fact you’re roped into buying fuel and general maintenance for said vehicle. the only way I can see fear being a factor would be the “can I afford the next major expense”.
mass transit is more efficient, cant really argue against that, but it’s in no way individualized or even customizable in any way at a personal level. you also have to base your entire schedule around the bus/train and then when it doesnt show up on time (or show up at all) you’re basically fucked. a personal vehicle has none of those failings. as a matter of fact, in many places in America you’re required to own your own vehicle because the cities are few and far between… existing without owning a vehicle is akin to being stranded on a deserted island - you’re cut off from the rest of the world. most folks dont like being physically cut off from society - preventing it isnt selfishness, it’s being prepared

it’s not really difficult to recycle plastics (depolymerisation) - but it’s not cheap to do it at scale and there really isnt any way to profit from it, so it’s just not done.
