Stop Russian Colonialist Aggression•Conversation with Serhii Plokhy and Olia Hercules
2·2 years ago@dana @picard@lemmy.blahaj.zone I read elsewhere (like this article in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/oct/28/chef-ievgen-klopotenko-putting-ukrainian-cuisine-back-on-the-map) how even Ukrainians tended to lose memory of their own culinary heritage during Soviet times, and there’s a big movement by people like Ievgen Klopotenko (https://klopotenko.com/en) to reintroduce stuff that was lost back into their culture (he also has a book coming out in English later this year which I’m really looking forward to!).

2·2 years ago@dana @picard@lemmy.blahaj.zone Sorry, it did not boost your reply to me.
I agree - Summer Kitchens is excellent. I really want to try to write a review some time. It was quite a revelation to me, Ukrainian cuisine - like, it really should be considered one of the top world cuisines. And the fact that not only is it not - but that almost nobody would even think there is such a thing in the first place - probably says quite a lot about the colonial silencing of the Ukrainian culture.

1·2 years ago@toni@blahaj.zone @I_Like_Books @toni@lemmy.blahaj.zone @dana Oh well spotted - yes I think that’s what is happening for me too, couldn’t figure out why some replies with my Lemmy account worked and some didn’t…

1·2 years ago@I_Like_Books @toni @dana Sorry, I meant when I reply using my Lemmy account. In theory you don’t need one to reply - like we just did now from Mastodon. But if you want to make longer replies or for other reasons you might use one. The group should boost any replies, and you can then boost those in Mastodon to spread if you want. I think this whole thing is kind of a work in progress though - in general we’re not used to working with software with so many quirks, but we’ll get there 😊

1·2 years ago@I_Like_Books @toni @dana Followed the group in Akkoma so will report on there next time a post is added with URL - my understanding is old posts do not get populated when first followed, or something, so need to wait for a new one with URL.
Oh and still can’t reply to most posts in Lemmy, hence here from Mastodon.

1·2 years ago@I_Like_Books @toni @dana Somewhat annoyingly, pictures attached when you reply in Mastodon do not show up here in Lemmy either. And I’m unable to upload any pictures in Lemmy - get a json error.
But I see your pictures in Mastodon when this group boosted it (strange), and confirm same for me - my review post and Dana’s podcast post both appeared in my feed boosted by the group. Don’t know about Calckey, instance having major slowdowns so not checking much in the evenings.
@dana@blahaj.zone @dana@lemmy.blahaj.zone yes me too! Just make it how you like with a guide. Even with more prescriptive recipes I tend to just follow loosely as well.
@dana I think it looks amazing. Homemade borshch is great.
Really good photo too!
And the recipe sounds quite easy.

2·2 years ago@toni@blahaj.zone @toni@lemmy.blahaj.zone @dana Directly supporting Ukrainians: https://shop.brave.ua is a marketplace operated in partnership with the Ukrainian government; Ukrainians provide products for sale internationally. I’ve used it many times and can vouch for it. Products range from clothes (got a fantastic winter coat from them), books, paintings, jigsaws, honey, etc. Delivery cost is per seller, not per order, so that’s worth bearing in mind - buying from multiple sellers will incur multiple delivery charges.

2·2 years ago@toni@blahaj.zone @toni@lemmy.blahaj.zone OK I have a few will split into some separate posts.
@dana already covered some so will leave them off mine.
Anna from Ukraine (https://youtube.com/channel/UCiVefOT4TGW3pOqW6AxmlBQ) - daily vlog with war, culture, history - plus Soviet Myths Debunked.
How to be brave like Ukraine (https://howtobe.brave.ua/en-index.php) is a short course on Ukrainian history provided in partnership with the Ukrainian government covering a range of subjects - art, culture, technology; lessons are easy and only take about ten minutes each.

2·2 years ago@toni@blahaj.zone @dana @toni@lemmy.blahaj.zone Hello
I may have some suggestions for podcasts, media, resources - will try to put something useful together today. Started writing but realised I could go on for ages and not sure how much / what structure you’re after. Seems like there are a lot of good resources, not sure how many you want, or how much can fit in description box?
One other minor thing: there’s a small typo of aggression in the final paragraph of description.
@eshep @salarua @madcodger Yeah the Calckey PWA is great! A much better experience than any of the apps with support, in my opinion.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•Has Steam Deck done good for the rest of the linux community?
3·3 years ago@poVoq @altair222 I think the incentivisation to improve Proton is a big part of it. To be honest, I never really had any issues playing anything in Linux in the year before the Deck, so in practice probably not noticed any difference.
But I feel it’s hard to quantify isn’t it? Like, would Diablo 4 beta have worked without issue had the ecosystem not already been built up to encourage people to tinker and get it working?
These kinds of intangible benefits are still positive factors I think…

@Moxvallix likewise!
