linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Every now and again a voice comes into my head telling me to install Arch.
2·5 months agoAgreed. After years of Ubuntu (who remember single digits?) Endeavour OS really knocked it out of the park on my new laptop. Everything smooth as butter, out of the box. Hibernation works on a bleeding edge device. No tearing. HDR works. VRR works. YouTube 4k 60fps no drops. Games run beautifully.
Okay, some BT issues, and the Wifi card is crap, and I don’t know how much of this is due to having an AMD graphics vs NVIDIA. But it’s sooo damn smooth. Games just work. KDE plasma >>>> gnome, and I say that as a gnome user since canonical killed unity.
Don’t get me started on the arch ecosystem and documentation. yay 😁

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Realized 99% of all my chargers are USB-C. This can only mean one thing. New USB bout to drop!
6·6 months agoWifi is generally faster though, at least from phones. They often have horrible data transfer with MTP, and use USB2.0, so maybe 20-30MB/s real-world. Wifi is much faster, I usually get double that or more on my phone. Way more fun to transfer videos etc, and you don’t need to plug it to another device to push something to network storage.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.
2·6 months agoNot going to claim it really matters that much. Everyone chooses their own principles and battles to make themselves feel better. We try to cut out as much meat as possible.
Beef, because it pollutes the most globally.
Most pork because they’re clever and the nitrate pollution in my particular part of the world due to pig manure threatens the local ground water
So our chicken consumption went up a bit, but mostly the tofu consumption. Doesn’t mean we’re religious or even the least bit of preachy about it, god I hate those ppl. But it makes you feel better if you think you’re at least a bit in control of some things. Like your own diet.

3·8 months agoThe US slowly turning into Russia. Already a propaganda driven oligarchy, and the bitterness will follow as those with a brain start to leave.
WSL has many issues which are not getting fixed, and rather classified as “won’t fix, as out of scope”. Further, WSL isn’t supported on Windows Server, which is really annoying if you’re dealing with M$ only infrastructure at your company and hoping to use WSL as an alternative way of deployment.
It’s basically just a “cheapish” way of keeping Devs on Windows, preemting any semblance of competition by Linux desktop environments from forming. They know they lost the server market, but they can cling on to the Desktop environment market as much as possible, at the same time eating into apple’s market share in this specific power user market. Not that Apple cares that much anyway, they’re content with selling iPhones.

42·2 years agoI use FF to help keep the browser “market” competitive. We don’t want to end up in the same situation as early 2ks where html standardisation was essentially “internet explorer compatibility”, and if you wanted to use newer features as a web dev you had to put multiple implementations, one for IE, and one for the others, as in the browsers actually implementing the specifications correctly. Now MS didn’t exactly do nefarious things with their market power, it was rather neglect, but it damaged the industry nevertheless. For Google, in today’s market, I’d anticipate they would use it to make it very difficult to block ads etc. Internet will become less free.

75·3 years agoI’d say to you all: get used to bombshells dropping! At some point the investor pyramid scheme will go crashing down. It might be now. All those companies were on borrowed time. Until investors realised that “data” isn’t valuable on its own - it’s what you make of it. There needs to be a product that generates revenue. Spoiler alert, it is hard to come up with a business plan that takes plain usage data and makes the technical challenges worthwhile to squeeze money from it. I can feel it myself as data scientist. The honeymoon’s over, investors want to see ROI.
I mean this cycle will probably recover in a few years when the markets recover but still - some lessons stick

Ok let me spell it out. We don’t know if it’s a few hundred dollars and it doesn’t matter. We don’t know why he was in prison, but if he got 12 years, it won’t be drunk driving. If someone did sth before they’re more likely to do it again. You got your work done, and didn’t pay up. The guy can use a bit of cash to get back on their feet. Basically, there is no serious argument why you wouldn’t pay the dude apart from you being a massive cunt, both morally and just general self preservation.
Honestly, I’d probably pay them what I owe plus interest - I can sleep well and the dude is going to be happy.
