@Beersux1516@lemmy.zip what do you mean? Isn’t a hearing assist feature potentially very useful to lots of people? Everyone can struggle in a noisy environment and not everyone has perfect hearing.
Interested in all things fedi, uspol at least for this year, technology. Loving Sharkey.

@JackbyDev@programming.dev @return2ozma@lemmy.world well that’s still Waymo’s argument I think. Elon is a bit different in many ways…

@MyOpinion@lemmy.today Yeah the correct takeaway isn’t that it’s dead. Firstly because even though they’re definitely by far the most significant player Meta isn’t the only company doing VR and secondly because they’re continuing to work on it…
But it does say something if they’re drastically cutting the budget and I found Bosworth’s statement partially unconvincing since he decided to pretend like it’s nothing.

@tonytins@pawb.social a bit sensational way to frame this. There’s no evidence that the cited examples in the original article are a result of the changes or that they’re necessarily making changes that would make the Waymo Driver less safe.
There’s that potential and the mentioned real problems are worth some attention regardless but some of these changes sound like they’re motivated by just addressing situations where Waymo is unable to make the decisions any safe driver would because there are conflicting rules to follow for example…

@MyOpinion@lemmy.today I assume Reality Labs works on all the smart glasses and AR tech too so I find it surprising they’d be pivoting away from this space so hard…
Well it seems like the article talks about the “metaverse division” within Reality Labs so you’d think it would be more about Horizon Worlds than VR headsets but the article suggests it is both…

@Gullible@sh.itjust.works There isn’t a problem that could not be solved by legislation here. The police is already able to give tickets to self-driving cars in some states. You can certainly argue that the megacorps aren’t inclined to care when the amount of money involved is tiny but then again that problem exists in most places just as much when it comes to fining rich people. You could always up the amounts if the politicians are willing to do that.
The more consequential thing that can already be done currently is grounding the entire fleet if there’s a good reason for that so it’s not like officials are completely helpless.

@fhein@lemmy.world @Prunebutt@slrpnk.net The aggressive pricing for Deck was an experiment from Valve. I imagine they must consider it mostly successful since it led to the device creating an entire new gaming market segment. The way they are speaking about the Steam Frame and Machine sounds like they’re not ncessarily really looking to repeat that model here though.

@artyom@piefed.social I saw a headline that they’re open to other vendors using it. With the Deck it took them a long time and there’s still not any kind of public build process AFAIK though.

@echodot@feddit.uk I don’t think that’s the determining factor for whether something is useless for AR. AR can be useful even just because it lets you be aware of your surroundings. Then there’s the fun of combining real-world objects and structures with virtual ones. Quest 3 can be good for both to some extent.

@jj4211@lemmy.world the SoC is better than Quest 3 so that is also a notable improvement. Comfort seems likely to be significantly better than with Quest 3 and default strap. Wireless dongle is included in the price. Will have to wait for reviews to know how some other aspects compare.

@utopiah@lemmy.world @ampersandrew@lemmy.world seems like there’s more potential for hardware upgrades than with any other headset since the system has separate modules for compute/optics+display/tracking and audio/strap/power but sure, no XR headset is going to be very upgradable given the harsh constraints on size and weight.

@MoonlitSanguine@lemmy.zip @jcs@lemmy.world it would certainly be good for it to be relatively affordable but they’re really not promising it will at the moment since they only said aiming it to be cheaper than an Index.

Would be really happy to see them make another real one instead of that Steam-branded regular controller by Hori that came out. The original was not so easy to get used to by everyone with the trackpads being mandatory instead of optional but if the second one did the same thing the Steam Deck does and included both traditional controls as well as decent trackpads I think it would be perfect. Still really like my original Steam Controller too.
Also definitely interested in seeing what Valve sees the next tracked VR controller being like. The Index controllers have lots of interesting ideas but were never really utilized to the degree I hoped and some parts like the way they try to do finger tracking are probably outdated in them.
Guessing their sudden desire for peace is very selectively applied. @news@lemmy.world

Yeah no… Voting Trump in the hopes of him being better on Gaza than Harris would have been is absolutely delusional.
Trump played a part in causing October 7th by not involving Palestinians in any discussions and moving the US Embassy to East Jerusalem. The Great march of return riots occurred directly as a consequence of his actions. He has not said anything good when it comes to Gaza and his support for Israel was always unwavering.
This is great, could always use better Android email clients and Thunderbird is quite good on the desktop at least.

For the ecosystem something like Quest 3 that a substantial number of people can actually afford would probably help way more. For feedback they probably do usability testing etc. anyway.
While I do appreciate that Apple threw their hat in the ring and found some of their designs very interesting to look at I am overall fairly puzzled when it comes to the question of what exactly did releasing AVP achieve.

There’s no doubt the visual quality is and will be better in many ways but not when it comes to the actual passthrough video which will never be as good as just showing reality directly.
AVP can also still be a mistake because it released now at an insane price point and without that light form factor. Doesn’t really help the case that some day it can be light, especially when Apple didn’t really even try with this one.

@virtualreality@lemmy.world might be a little early to expect hearing about them… aside from the Xbox one that I thought was just branding for your standard Quest but that one would probably do better if unveiled at an Xbox event.
@Anivia@feddit.org @FreeBooteR69@lemmy.ca Quest is hard to compete with since Meta has driven the cost fairly low, pretty sure Frame is going to have a somewhat higher price tag, hopefully so much less than the Index that it matters.
