I just don’t invite people to my home until I’m reasonably convinced they sit to pee. Usually if it comes up in a conversation and they say it, I’m not sneaking behind bathroom doors to hear them peeing if that’s what you thought. And if my bathroom is a mess after someone came to my house for the first time, they’re not getting invited again. Never happened though.

Oh god, now I wanna play it again, lol, but this would ruin my life. How is it currently? Is DFHack still a thing on the Steam version? I remember there were some really cool mods but they were a bit sparse and underdeveloped. And I loved how you could mod the game by just editing text files, very Emacsy in spirit, I wish every software would allow that. I always made saltwater crocodiles domestic, hehe, they gave a lot of eggs plus it was cool to have a bunch of baby crocs following my dwarves around.

I love it when the libre software world moves from “what if there was an open source version of this” to “thanks for the starting concept, dear company, we’ll take it from here and make something bigger and better”.

I remember I tried Luanti a while ago (before the name change) but got a bit confused by the many games, like I thought it would be literally just a libre version of minecraft with builtin moddability. Once I read a bit about it it made a lot more sense, but by that time I was too busy to try it again. I’ve been thinking of getting back to gaming, I might give this a shot if I can’t find a libre version of Dwarf Fortress.

Well, from what I remember DF had a side bar with every keybinding, including one on how to exit it 😂. Jk lol nothing but respect for our vim comrades.

Yeah, Emacs has the same issue, although people say it’s less ergonomic than Vim. But honestly I don’t even notice that anymore, for me it’s just a quirk of pre-gui applications and once you get used to it, the “lots of keybindings” becomes no more mentally costly than trying to figure out which graphical menu holds which option. Like I’m sure if I were to learn vim it would be just as hard as trying to learn some new type of graphical software with it’s own set of conventions. Actually, I tried playing with audacity recently and I couldn’t tell what a single thing was. So much visual information that I felt overwhelmed, I feel like a polluted gui is actually harsher on me than having to memorize arcane keybindings which I can simply write on a sheet of paper and check whenever I want. Same issue when I go to the supermarket and spend hours circling the same lanes trying to find what I want.

Fun fact: people joke about how you can’t exit vim but it actually happened to me, lol, I tried it once, long before emacs, since it came installed, and I couldn’t figure out how to exit it. I don’t remember a lot about the incident but for a while it made me incredibly hostile to both vim and emacs and any terminal application really.

I’m trying to get into note taking and the community is extremely hostile to what they call “the collector’s instinct”.

Well, what they don’t realize is that before I fell victim to it, I was falling victim to the procrastinator’s instinct. I would find out about a new concept when trying to read something and then feel an unbearable urge to go look for it. This led me to missing deadlines very often because my nervous system can’t tell “I actually need to understand this a little bit before proceeding” and “omg going deep in this irrelevant tangent mentioned as a sidenote is the key to ultimate happiness and I’m about to switch careers and start a cult around it”.

Now I just have a big quick.org file where I just write anything I want to remember later in any format, completely unstructured. This allows me to keep doing what I actually need to do since it takes away the fear of forgetting to look for it later, even if it’s the most interesting thing I’ve ever seen. And since this ended up becoming my most prized file (more than my actual structured notes), I can trust my paranoia to never lose it and keep a thousand backups of it. This made me so much more productive it’s hard to understate how much I would recommend the collector’s instinct for people like me.

As a side effect, my actual procrastination and free time became more intentional since now I have my own huge list of nice things to waste my time on. Sometimes when I’m trying to do something and I feel too tired I just skim through the list and it brings me so much satisfaction I actually go right back to being productive.

How do I delete someone else’s post?

Bro stop, it’s literally my career because it was the only thing that felt easy to me (I tried a bunch of stuff before), like it’s a lot easier and cheaper to learn on your own than most crafts and imo it should be even easier. I don’t take this as offense, I take it as a compliment that we are one of the few careers where people still have enough power over their tools to genuinely improve them and enough solidarity to put in the effort of making it more and more accessible to others, be it by making simpler tools, or writing tutorials and guides for free, or taking the time to answer even the noobiest questions. I want to see more and more comments like this.

What I do now when a Youtube channel starts enshittifying is unsubscribe and copy the channel’s url to a plain text list. I’ll occasionally check it using Noutube, see the video list, and if there’s anything interesting, I’ll watch it there. That way I can still enjoy whatever little content is still worth watching without rewarding the channel more than necessary.
