4·3 days agoFrom what I’ve read, the initial strike not only killed the new leader’s father, but also his wife and child. I’m pretty sure he will not be willing to easily negotiate with the United States after something like that.

12·3 days agoIt’s pretty crazy to me that zuck let an actual academic like Yann LeCun go for a kid like Alex Wang. Seems like some very short term thinking.

Unfortunate we have to face local blowback for a war no one but Israel wanted in a region that has nothing to do with us.

27·5 days agoI’ve lived in both and while the similarities are there, it’s a bit different. Singapore still has a majority non expat population while Dubai has only about a 10% local population. Singapore also invests heavily in local education with one of the highest densities of PhDs in the world.

news@lemmings.world•Skeptical Republicans are falling in line behind Trump’s Iran War push with this three-word mantraEnglish
7·5 days agoFor those of you not old enough to remember, this (“finish the job”) was famously the same mantra used for the Gulf War when George Bush Sr didn’t go after Saddam Hussain.
Well, his son took it to heart and went after Saddam a decade later in what is now universally seen as one of the stupidest wars the US every carried out.
It’s like these people learn nothing from history.

World News@lemmy.world•‘The shine has been taken off’: Dubai faces existential threat as foreigners flee conflictEnglish
38·5 days agoDubai was always an economy built on a bubble. As much as I hate how they treat foreign laborers and as much as I hate their current leaders, I have some respect for how far they were able to get with this model.
But ultimately, they are a country with little land, little water, terrible weather, and surviving on a vast expat population that has no path to citizenship and will always just see it as a destination to milk for as much money as possible.
I don’t see how such a model could ever be seen as sustainable in the long run.
Lol, no fucking way. I just looked it up and confirmed this is true. Can’t make this shit up.
