I definitely resonate with the concerns around algorithmic led discovery. It really felt manipulative, and actually very annoying when i used to watch youtube. Its less of a problem on Spotify, but its still there. I’ve recebtly been looking for good sources for Aussie music, its harder than i expected.

One of my local radio stations plugs AMRAP in regards to their Australian artist segments. It’s a site really intended for use by radio presenters and artists wanting to get some radio play time but it appears anyone can search for music (including by state/region) and listen to a 30 sec sample. Seems like something that could be useful as a way to at least find names to look further into.
Oh wow! Yeah that site looks really interesting! Kind of exactly what i’m looking for as well, with the articles.
I keep asking people how do I find out about bands djs etc in perth that are home grown. No one really has an answer. Ot is always a friend of a friend.
The only other ways i know are Xpress magazine, or maybe RTRfm.
But discoverability is definitely a problem for smaller interest areas, i’m listening to the Dot Social podcast with Mike Mccue(spotify link) a fair bit today trying to figure out how federated/socialweb, social media could help special interest/local news coalesce in a more discoverable and user-publisher interactive way.

I feel like I don’t care if a song is Australian or not when I first hear it, but it becomes more important later if it’s good.
My kids watch the music video for Frontier Psychiatrist all the time, and it makes me feel good it’s an Australian group
