    • Among the music-engaged, there is a recognition of the challenge that streaming and social media pose to the discovery of emerging Australian artists. Some of the music-engaged are concerned that algorithms may limit the exposure of lesser-known artists. There is also a recognition of the important role radio – in particular triple j

I definitely resonate with the concerns around algorithmic led discovery. It really felt manipulative, and actually very annoying when i used to watch youtube. Its less of a problem on Spotify, but its still there. I’ve recebtly been looking for good sources for Aussie music, its harder than i expected.

One of my local radio stations plugs AMRAP in regards to their Australian artist segments. It’s a site really intended for use by radio presenters and artists wanting to get some radio play time but it appears anyone can search for music (including by state/region) and listen to a 30 sec sample. Seems like something that could be useful as a way to at least find names to look further into.

The only other ways i know are Xpress magazine, or maybe RTRfm.

But discoverability is definitely a problem for smaller interest areas, i’m listening to the Dot Social podcast with Mike Mccue(spotify link) a fair bit today trying to figure out how federated/socialweb, social media could help special interest/local news coalesce in a more discoverable and user-publisher interactive way.

I put a link in the sidebar to Xpress mag along with a number of other Australian music focused “street press” publications i’ve found.

I feel like I don’t care if a song is Australian or not when I first hear it, but it becomes more important later if it’s good.

My kids watch the music video for Frontier Psychiatrist all the time, and it makes me feel good it’s an Australian group
