There’s the rub. AI isn’t going kill us. LLMs certainly aren’t going to. But, humans will certainly kill humanity. And it is not going to be quick and certainly not painless. But eventually, it is going to be pretty inevitable.

if the ai experts think ai is gonna kill us. they are not experts they are delusional.

the only way it’ll get us, is from using up our water and adding to climate change.

AI is a digital set of instructions that can be written on paper. Biological brains are analog, by contrast, and there is currently no reason to think that digital computation can produce subjectivity.

    That’s good and bad.

It’s good, because our approach to artificial intelligence (putting a lot of processing power into a Rube Goldberg machine) cannot “come alive.” Such a machine is like a calculator, unmotivated and inert.

That’s bad, because it will ALWAYS do what people tell it to do, the way a printer will print whatever you tell it to print. Such an intelligence will never develop normative understanding (or morality), never know that it is alive, because it is an inanimate process.

How do you explain the landers in Defender that don’t just move down the screen in ranks like in Space Invaders then?

I am so much more worried about climate change or nuclear war being the killers. I presume AI experts are probably going through the same psychosis and such that anyone else who regularly uses it is going through.

To be fair I do think the current way AI is being run with massive data centers is making the climate catastrophe worse but that’s little different.

It is so weird that American techbros have generated their own little universe of heroes and villains that all fight each other but are clearly written by the same guy so they all ultimately support the same set of values and worldviews that clearly make no sense outside the one guys’ mind.

Gotta say, Silicon Valley’s writer is a complete hack and these effective altruism idiots aren’t worth the ink any more than their supervillain counterparts are. The whole simplistic extrapolation to infinity nonsense is exhausting and pointless.
