How Something Awful Became the World’s Operating System

    Real alternatives would require acknowledging that SA’s social operating system has reached the end of its useful life. That means abandoning the assumption that online social interaction must be organized around drama, hierarchy, and performative conflict. It means designing systems that optimize for different values: genuine dialogue over engagement, collaboration over competition, mutual aid over social capital accumulation.

    Ok, say we buy into the premise of the article, how do we optimize for genuine dialog, collaboration, and mutual aid? Is this something that exists elsewhere online or is it just a list of noble principles?

      I think there are communities which have managed to pull it off: While the Wikipedia usually gets in the news when drama happens, most of the time its community is very much working collaboratively to improve the Wikipedia.
