Well, yeah. Censoring isn’t everywhere because people complained, it’s because advertisers complained.
The irony is movies shown on TV with people being murdered and blood flying everywhere and bleeping out the swearing.
I really dislike the sound they use for censoring. It’s so annoying. Plus, why make it so loud? I think they genuinely do it to make it seem worse and grab your attention.
Another thing I hate is when the subtitles are censored but not the audio. That’s actually pretty ableist if you think about it. They should match. If the audio is censored, censor the subtitles. If the audio is uncensored, don’t censor the subtitles. It infantilizes people who are hard of hearing as if they can’t handle a swear.

That’s probably from back in the analog days where the only ways to censor a word from a live audio feed were to kill the signal or to overlay another, louder noise that renders the undesirable word unintelligible. If the video and audio signals are coupled and you don’t wanna interrupt video, that just leaves bleeping over it.

The signals were not coupled, at least not in that way, and at least in NTSC. None of the bandwidth of the audio signal overlaps with the video signal. In fact, the audio signal was just a standard FM signal that you could tune into with a radio.
Maybe in those days they just played a loud noise that didn’t actually replace the sound and that was cheaper than setting something up with bandpass filters to mute it for a moment.

I suppose you could view it like that lol. I’m not sure if modern video formats found a way to compress audio and video together. My guess is not because they’re so inherently different. Films (like ya know, movies on film) had the audio on the film besides the frames.
Youtube auto censors the subtitles if you don’t tick off a setting.

I love it when the tough guy alpha male MAGAts on various social media are so bad they self-censor words they know will get them banned.
Conversely, I hate how so many types of social media are self-censoring words because they’re trying not to lose views according to an algorithm. It demeans the terrible severity when someone talks about rape by calling it ‘grape’, for instance. ‘Unalived’ is the most fucking ridiculous one.

Recently started reading the primal Hunter book 13 and the author in the recap chapter at the start of the book just went off on a blind tangent pissed off about self-censorship and how retarded it is. It was the most cathartic thing I have read in a long time. Absolutely fantastic.
Also, if you’re a fan of lit RPG, highly recommend the primal Hunter books. Great reads! Fantastic audiobooks amazing narrator.

I always find it funny how in other countries, there isn’t so much a stigma for kids being exposed to cursing and swearing in something like cartoons. I have always hated how music even has to be censored to appease the—let’s face it—minority (probably religious) who happen to like everything else about the song except for language they deem unworthy. The artist expresses themselves with honesty. If you can’t handle that, tough shit. Listen to a podcast or Kidsbop. FFS

Writing is a tool for communication. Writing something implies your desire to communicate it.
This might land a little controversial but I’ll go one step further and say you should not censor racial/homophobic slurs if they are not being used for offense. For example:
“I hate my cop neighbor, I heard he called my niece a f***ot”
(I obviously censored it here because lemmy prob. has a filter for that shit.)
In this sentence, I am not attacking anyone and I am simply trying to communicate a bad act done by somebody else. The message of the sentence is not homophobic in any way and me censoring the nasty word definitely didn’t change anything about the message. People can still hear that word loud and clear.
So if you think including the word would be offensive for people, and think it’s not a crucial part of your message, simply don’t write it.

I wouldn’t even hate it so much if it were spelt better. Ahh reads like the noise the doctor asks you to make. I can’t help but read it like that in my head, and my head doesn’t like it. I’m not even sure what the phonetically correct spelling would be. Even aaa would be better imo.
Ahh is a word I use for thinking sounds (ahh, uhm, um) so I keep reading it as that and then I have to reread it. Annoying!
