Today is International Women’s Day. What are the reasons we still need it?

Because there are people who ask why there is no International Men’s Day and no Straight Pride.

Because people like my father and one of the local elected officials I work with say, out loud and in public and to my face, that women don’t belong in the work force, sigh.

    • Abortion is not legal everywhere or severely restricted and/or criminalised
    • The right to become a woman is limited in many places
    • The wage gap (women often get paid 20% less!)
    • In some places, women still cannot vote at all
    • Or we cannot buy things of our own
    • We cannot always travel home safely unlike men, and have to inform each other where we are

    To name a few!

Because there are people demanding to see women’s genitals in the bathroom on the off chance one of them has a penis (the possession of which is frowned upon for some reason)

I live alone, so have a group chat with several friends and family members with the sole purpose of me sharing my location whenever I’m going home from somewhere alone at night and telling them when I arrived safely.

There are of course many bigger reasons, especially if you look worldwide. But sometimes it’s worth looking at all the small adjustments we have to do in our daily lives. Sometimes I just want to walk somewhere at night without listening for every car approaching from behind to check if it slows down when nearing me.
