SAG-AFTRA has ordered union members not to work on Mega Man: Dual Override
Video games are notorious for ignoring voice acting unions. Rockstar games for example.
I support unions. But a lot of imported content, like dubbed anime, is non-union.
So will this mean anything?
Probably won’t mean much for the worst companies, but I can assure you some companies hire union actors (even when internally, they are anti-union). The restrictions are a bit more than pay, as they have to plan carefully for voice work since there’s minimum sessions and stuff.
Also quite a lot is just done via third party contract with VA agencies, even AAA. Those agencies do both games and anime. They kinda have to hire unions since they’ll lose all their best talent if they don’t, so that’s a factor.
(Btw, my source is my wife, she complains because she works in localization at a AAA and it can be really hard when you need just a single line of dialog and have to pay for a whole session, lol. And if you need to redo a line… oh boy, but you get creative with their time).
I am also not particularly optimistic that it will change much, but nonetheless I respect the union and its member standing up for their principles.
It’s more than just principles, it’s their entire function. What is the purpose of a union if a member can just be coerced into working without its protection?
Oh, absolutely. Still probably everyone of us will remember one or several occasions when a union abandoned its stance in order to reach some sort of “deal” to the detriment of its members. I am 100% in favor of unions big and small, but I also don’t harbor any illusions about them being able to *not cave under pressure.
The correct answer was to invite Capcom to Fuck off.
Which is basically what the union is doing.
Bingo. I’m with you.
