I need internet for work, but other than that - yeah, sure!

I already self-host many things, and it’d be reasonably straightforward to make them work in local WiFi with no internet. TLS certs would be something to fix (custom CA).

For chatting with friends, I’d set up a low-bandwith software modem over telephone, with some sort of store-and-forward system like SMTP (email) or Secure Scuttlebutt, Syncthing for files.

For keeping in touch with kids in school or other comms needs within a kilometer or 5, I’d buy a handful of Meshtastic radios.

    Yes.

Basically all my work communicate exclusively through email, so that will be an issue. But for $200k I can set an autoreply and ignore it. I have a year of leave that I could use, this would be a good use of it.
