We all have that one homie who is a 20th century history-consuming machine. I hope the curse thing is a metaphor. What is “state capitalism”?? PLEASE STOP ADDING BACKGROUND MUSIC!

In this next chapter of the Making of Modern Japan series, I introduce the origins and intricacies of Japanese fascism, a unique ideological project that emerged in the tumultuous 1920s. I also introduce the three future war criminals released by General Charles Willoughby in 1948, and exemplify how these three figures played a prominent role in Japan’s wartime state. Nobusuke Kishi, grandfather to Shinzo Abe and soon to be economic manager of Manchukuo. Yoshio Kodama, Japan’s top post-war fixer and intermediary between the Yakuza and ultranationalist circles. And finally Ryoichi Sasakawa, a right wing businessman who started one of Japan’s first truly fascist political organizations.
