I really like the look of this sedan. When Hyundai made the Ioniq 5 I thought they needed to make more cars with this design style. The Ioniq 6 doesn’t do it for me. The unreleased hydrogen sports car is sexy AF.

Agreed! BMW/Merc/Audi have jumped the shark in the 2020s for the most part.

My wife is on her second Ioniq 5 (my son totaled the first one driving like an asshole, just glad nobody got hurt) and other than pilot issues they’ve both been bulletproof.
How do you like the Ioniq 5 overall? Its on my shortlist for my next car.
As road specific (vs off-road) SUVs go. Pretty sure it’s almost perfect. Very comfortable, open on the inside almost like a minivan. The software is good. The driving assists are great in stop and go traffic. The wonky stuff has mostly been fixed.
We had a 2023 and now a 2024 and my wife is pissed every time she sees a 2026 because they have rear window wipers. The back glass gets pretty dirty and is lacking in earlier years.
It’s also a bit of a wonky bitch in car washes. Even when I tell it to stay in neutral through a process that almost needs a flowchart to get that it’s still dumb.
But she washes it not me for the most part so otherwise it’s great. Gets milage over advertised and with winter tires on it handles snow and ice like a champ.
Are they? For the models I have experience with, cost of ownership beats toyota, honda, etc. with Elantra engines typically lasting 150k - 200k+ miles.
I’ll say, I had one I neglected the maintenance on pretty severely - infrequent oil changes, not rotating the tires, not getting inspections. Put 170k+ miles on it, never broke down in ~14yrs of use. Had some issues with the spark plugs causing engine timing problems a couple times and there were maybe 3 recalls (which I mostly ignored). Traded it in in good working order.
I hear before 2010ish they were extremely unreliable. But starting in ~2011 or so they became much higher quality than they were.
My 2013 Elantra had the engine blow twice despite regular maintenance. Once at 60k, another at 105k. First replacement was under warranty, second wasn’t since it was 5k over their power train warranty. Would take more than the car was worth to fix it, so I sold it for dirt cheap despite it otherwise being in great condition.
My brother’s 2015 elantra’s paint started peeling off everywhere 2 years after buying it. He took it in and got it covered under warranty after arguing with them, only for the paint to start peeling again immediately after they fixed it. His door handle recently stopped working too.
The recently settled engine lawsuit even goes all the way up to 2021 for some models. Definitely after 2010 anyways.
And that’s not even mentioning all the other random recalls they’ve had over things like fire risks (like one in the oil pump, you know, one of the few things in a car you don’t want to be a fire risk) and the whole fiasco with them being easy to steal. I haven’t looked into the reliability of their electric vehicles, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they’re not much better.
It’s great if your Hyundais are performing well and not dealing with random quality issues, but I refuse to touch them with a 10ft pole anymore.
Oh wow. Yeah that’s pretty rough. Yeah, my elantra also had that fire risk recall - and the dealership said it’d take 4 weeks for them to get the parts to fix it (despite it being a massive recall).

They really were. My first experience with Hyundais was a friend whose 4 year old vehicle was in the shop all the time, full of rattles, in general felt like a 15 year old car.
Over the years I’ve read a lot about huge quality improvements and that they’re now on par, but it’s tough to get over that first impression
I guess I’m lucky I never had Honda, Toyota, Subaru when they were crappy
